‘Gossip Girl’: The original drama
The 2007 series followed the lives of a bunch of high schoolers belonging to wealthy families and living in the posh Upper East Side neighbourhood of New York City. In the series, ‘Gossip Girl’, voiced by Kristen Bell, was a blogger who revealed all the deep and dark secrets of Upper East Siders. The series made superstars out of its fresh-faced cast that included Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, and Ed Westwick.
During its run, the show’s popularity knew no bounds and became one of the most popular teen dramas in the world. The show gained attention not just because of its good-looking cast and melodramatic plot, but also for incorporating trendsetting fashion. The show became a pop-culture phenomenon and has been referenced subsequently in countless movies and television series.
The series has previously been called “Greatest Teen Drama of All Time” by New York magazine and “4th TV’s Biggest Guilty Pleasure” by AOL TV.
The reboot: Things we will get to see
According to the press release, the basic plot of the much-awaited reboot is:
“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.”
To begin with, even though there is no confirmation on whether any of the original cast members will be making appearances on the show, the makers have confirmed that Kristen Bell will be making her return as the narrator of the show. On the possibility of the original actors returning, showrunner Schwartz revealed,
“We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon [them being involved]. They played these characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we want to respect that, but obviously … it would be great to see them again”.
The new line-up of young actors includes – Emily Alyn Lind, Thomas Doherty, Adam Chanler-Berat, Tavi Gevinson, Zion Moreno, Eli Brown, Whitney Peak, Evan Mock, Johnathan Fernandez, and Jason Gotay. The show will be set in the same universe as the original show. So, the characters will be attending the same high school i.e. Constance Billard, will be wearing the same uniforms as the characters of the original show, and will be living in the Upper East Side.
The show will also have a lot more queer content and will address events of the current world.
The ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot has begun filming and on November 6th, 2020, new cast members Eli Brown and Whitney Peak were seen shooting in New York City, all dressed up while exiting a building in the rain. The first two episodes are being directed by Karena Evans who has directed music videos for singer Drake in the past. The first look assures fans that the reboot will be even bigger on the fashion front and has sored the expectations of fans. The series will be releasing in 2021 on HBO Max.
