‘Castle Rock’ Season 2: More elements of mystery, more entertainment
The concept of Stephen King’s universe around the horror town ‘Castle Rock’ was refreshed and refined in season 2. It eschewed the abstract ideas and lingering mysteries of season 1 for a more straightforward story of madness, corruption, and the intrusion of the supernatural into a not-so-sleepy little town. The second season owes its success to the inclusion of Annie Wilkes in the central storyline. Played by Lizzie Caplan, Annie is arguably one of the most recognizable characters from King’s universe.
She’s unstable and violent and oddly proficient to the point of being sadistic, which makes her something of an outlier of female antagonists. And, a reliable point of fascination for fans is the sort of misery Annie’s ire can bring.

Annie provides audiences with a much-needed anchor point in the larger King universe that ‘Castle Rock’ aims to continue depicting. After watching the first few episodes of season 2, it becomes clear how sorely this was missed in season 1.
The latter took a broader, less focused approach to its shared universe, apart from a starring role for Shawshank Prison and a few shallow nods to King’s work sprinkled throughout. ‘Castle Rock’ Season 2 succeeds in the scaled-back approach to its King universe. It is also because the pressure to try and include as many King Easter eggs as possible has eased somewhat. That gives the series a chance to put its energies into telling a more coherent story. There’s still plenty of King paraphernalia floating around for eagle-eyed viewers, but ‘Castle Rock’ is no longer so insistent on its importance to the overall story. Instead, the series mercifully lets the narrative speak for itself.
Potential plots for ‘Castle Rock’ Season 3
‘Castle Rock’ follows the anthology concept, that’s why the plot for season 3 is hard to guess. Since the showrunners aren’t afraid to melt pieces of the authors’ stories together, it is anyone’s guess as to what can possibly be spun for viewers if season 3 arrives.
Which ‘Castle Rock’ cast and characters will return for season 3, if there is one, is a mystery as well. But we’ll likely see the return of Bill Skarsgard as The Kid. He is the link between the first and second seasons, and it stands to reason that it could carry on in further seasons if they materialize. Fans would love Lizzy Caplan returning to reprise her role as Annie Wilkes, but the character received a decent send-off.
Hulu’s statement on ‘Castle Rock’ Season 3
Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP of Scripted Originals, stated in an interview that, “[Hulu] has not made any further decisions” on renewing the series for a third season. This, however, won’t stop any of us from hopelessly hoping for a third season.
The first installment of the show premiered in July 2018, and the second premiered in late October 2019. But since there is no confirmation from the network, we are most likely not going to get a third season this year. The shutdown around the world due to the pandemic might not let the season 3 premiere happen this year, even if the network does finally decide to renew it.
We will have to wait for some more time to hear the official news from Hulu. Till then share your views about ‘Castle Rock’ in the comments box below.
