- Scrubs: A world through the eyes of Dr John “J.D.” Dorian
- Hiatus, renewal by ABC and rebooting with a new cast
- Is Peacock picking the series up for a season 10?
The award-winning series went on for seven seasons on NBC and was eventually taken over by ABC for the final two. Peacock, the new streaming service owned by NBC, has been rebooting and reviving old shows including Psych, Saved by the Bell and A.P. Bio ever since its launch. So, is Scrubs next on its list?
Scrubs: A world through the eyes of Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian
Scrubs followed the lives of the employees at the fictional teaching hospital, Sacred Heart, as they did their best to strike a balance between their personal lives and work lives. The show was narrated by its protagonist, Dr. John Michael “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff), initially an intern, but later an attending physician who would often find himself day-dreaming hilarious scenarios. Through the first eight seasons, John was supported by his love interest, Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) and best friend Christopher Turk (Donald Faison).
The series was a riotous slapstick comedy and was complimented by the phenomenal performances of its cast members. It changed its format in the final season and introduced a new cast of young actors, Eliza Coupe, Dave Franco, Michael Mosley and Kerry Bishé, retaining only Braff as a regular from the past seasons.
In 2006, EW.com called Scrubs ‘the trickiest comedy on TV’, for its quirky characters and witty plotlines. In 2016, the network announced that season 9 would be the last of the show.
A renewal by ABC and rebooting with a new cast
The series went though its ups and downs when the production of the series was shelved in 2007 after the Writers Guild went on a strike. That was when ABC played hero and saved the day, renewing the series for an eighth season. Despite the fact that the season 8 was at first intended to be the last one, the executives at ABC decided to produce one more.
Taking into consideration how the story was wrapped up in the season 8 finale, the makers decided to bring on board a new cast for season 9. This was met with much criticism from fans who were not thrilled with the idea of their favourite actors being replaced with new actors.
Which Character from Scrubs you are? (QUIZ)
Show-runner Bill Lawrence while talking about season 9 insisted, “It is a new show”. He further said, “What we’re implying is that the hospital is still moving forward and existing, and you’ll never notice it….I feel so good about what the show was that, if the worst-case scenario is that the show comes on for one year, doesn’t find any audience and people feel that creatively it’s not strong, as long as I know we tried, I can live with that.”
Season 9 of the show had the smallest viewership and failed to impress the audiences, attracting mixed reviews, even from critics. ABC cancelled the show after this season.
Is Peacock picking up the series for a season 10?
Well, it doesn’t seem so. However, the possibility is not out of the window yet. When the cast got together at the 2018 Vulture Fest, Zach Braff teased fans with a picture on his Twitter handle captioned, “Season 10?”, which led us to speculate about a possible renewal.
Lawrence said at the event that even though he is not up for a season 10, he wouldn’t mind bringing the cast back in some other format. He was quoted saying,
“If we ever do it, we’ll do it as a short little movie or something else. I think the problem is that I would just want to see where everyone is. I would want to see where their marriages are (as opposed to a huge event).”
