‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ will be leaving their cosy home on Netflix soon, but is there a silver lining?
The current streaming landscape has changed a bit for two of our favourite shows. ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’, will soon be leaving Netflix. But where will they go? NBCUniversal’s new streaming service “Peacock” promises to have over 15,000 hours of content, and it looks like that this might be their new home. Though neither of the two is currently available, Peacock is stacked with several other shows and movies from the network. The lineup includes ’30 Rock’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘, ‘Cheers’, ‘Frasier’, ‘Downton Abbey‘, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond‘, ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘Will & Grace’, and more!

Get ready to say goodbye to ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ reruns on Netflix
‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ have both become pop-culture staples and their relevance attracts new viewers every year. More and more fans are getting drawn into the comedic workplace sitcom series, and are resonating with their memorable characters.
Both shows introduced quirky but relatable characters that we loved. From Pawnee’s public servant Leslie and her squad of idiosyncratic weirdoes to world’s best boss Michael’s incredible employees at Dunder-Mifflin — both series are intelligently written, sport a stellar cast, and went on to become benchmarks in the workplace comedy genre.
‘The Office’ is so popular on Netflix that NBCUniversal apparently paid a staggering $500+ million for its exclusive move to Peacock. The ‘Parks & Recreation’ license fee is assumed to be nowhere near ‘The Office’s’, but is believed to be quite significant as well.
As of now, ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation‘ are available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. But since NBCU has acquired the rights to take their most famous sitcoms to their home network, it might be goodbye time soon.
Will both the shows join NBC’s Peacock?
It’s not rocket science to deduce that NBC would want two of their biggest flagship comedies on their own streaming platform. They’ve been available on competitive streaming platforms for years now and it looks like NBC has finally decided to bring them home.
NBC announced in a press release that it had secured exclusive domestic streaming rights for ‘The Office’ for five years. This means that ‘The Office’ will be available on Peacock from January 2021 all the way through 2026. You’ll have to subscribe to Peacock from next year if you want to continue binge-watching them again and again.
‘Parks and Recreation’ too has been acquired by NBCU, which will be streaming it exclusively on Peacock. It has been confirmed that the show will join the service in October 2020, when the show’s existing deals with other platforms expire. Peacock will also take in a number of NBCU series that are currently streaming on Hulu.
So, ‘The Office’ will be streaming on Netflix until January 2021 and ‘Parks and Recreation’ until October 2020. That’s enough time to stream the two shows ad-free to your heart’s content … but is it enough really?
Will ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ get reboots on Peacock?
Will your favourite Pawnee residents and Dunder-Mifflin employees get reboots on their home network’s streaming platform? As reported by “Vulture”, Peacock has locked deals for a great number of original series with existing ties to NBCU brands. A ‘Battlestar Galactica’ reboot is confirmed and there will also be a new comedy series starring ‘The Office’s’ Ed Helms.
We are sure that fans of the show completely support a possible reboot for both ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’. We definitely do. With so many other shows getting renewed for new seasons, you never know what’s possible at NBC!
But, according to a report posted by “Deadline”, NBCU has other ideas. Bill McGoldrick, the president of original content at NBCUniversal Entertainment had a few words to share on the topic of the reboot.
“We have not talked specifically about ‘The Office’ reboots for Peacock; we’ve talked about things we can do to support ‘The Office’ once it gets to our service but a reboot has not come up specifically”, he said.
He was very vague about any news of a possible reboot for the shows, but we do hope that the network thinks about it positively. He said, “lots of creative ideas” were being shared at the network. We’ll have to wait until next year to discover if any of these ideas will lead to possible reboots for ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’. For the time being, you can continue watching your favourite NBC shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.
Peacock is just getting started and won’t feature its biggest shows until later next year. So don’t worry until January 2021, because that’s when you’ll need to purchase a new digital subscription.
