While Netflix is yet to release any viewership data, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s directorial ‘The Old Guard’ received rave reviews from the critics, so it seems highly likely that the streaming service will order a sequel soon. Additionally, the movie ended with a cliff-hanger which suggests that there was always room for a sequel. Here’s everything we know about the sequel.

Where did ‘The Old Guard’ leave us?
‘The Old Guard’, which came out in July 2020, is a superhero-esque movie about a team of misfit immortal warriors who change the course of world history by protecting humanity.
The film saw Charlize Theron’s Andromache or “Andy” and her squad of immortal fighters face off against a nefarious pharma executive who wanted to use them as guinea pigs for his experiment and make money off the results. The pharma executive was supported by former CIA agent Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who had nobler intentions as he was grieving his dead wife. As the film progresses, they capture Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and when Andy went to rescue them, they captured her too.
In the end, it was the new recruit Nile (KiKi Layne) who comes to the rescue of his teammates and takes down the pharma. But, Andy’s wounds stophealing automatically, which indicated that she had lost her immortality.
However, she remains alive, even if she is not immortal anymore. Since Nile is a formidable new part of the group, there seems to be plenty of storytelling that could be done in the sequel.
Earlier, director Gina Prince-Bythewood also dropped hints about the film’s future. She told an entertainment portal that ‘The Old Guard’ was envisioned as a trilogy franchise.

Cast of ‘The Old Guard 2’
Presuming all of the major characters from ‘The Old Guard’ will be back, here’s our take on who will be in ‘The Old Guard 2’. We can expect Charlize Theron as Andy aka Andromache of Scythia and KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, a former US Marine to reprise their respective roles.
In addition, Matthias Schoenaerts aka Booker, or Sebastian Le Livre, a French soldier who fought under Napoleon, and Marwan Kenzari who plays Joe aka Yusuf Al-Kaysani, a Muslim warrior from the Crusades as well as Nicky’s lover are set to return.
Luca Marinelli aka Nicky, or Nicoló di Genova, former Crusader who once fought Joe and then became his lover along with Chiwetel Ejiofor who stars as James Copley, a former CIA agent who helps the immortals with their missions, are highly likely to return in the sequel.
Interestingly, the character played by Van Veronica Ngo named Quynh, Andy’s immortal partner who was locked in an iron maiden and tortured for 500 years, will also feature in the sequel.
But, the main villain of ‘The Old Guard’, Steven Merrick (Harry Melling), won’t be back, since he was killed in the first part.
We anticipate that there will probably be some new characters in ‘The Old Guard 2’. But we’ll have to wait and see who makes it to the cut.
What can we expect from the sequel?
As of now, we don’t quite know. But the makers claim to certainly have the source material for the sequel. The film is based on a graphic novel series written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez which contains at least ten issues. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood once said in an interview that the novels were her “Bible” when adapting the film. She also said that she worked alongside Rucka when bringing the characters on the screen.
In an interview, ‘The Old Guard’ star Charlize Theron said that the team went into this talking about the possibility of a sequel, and it’s definitely something that excites them.
Theron further theorized on this possibility in an interview with another portal, saying that “Any sequel will be based on the graphic novel. In terms of what Greg has written, Quynh has reared her head, and that causes some issues, absolutely. But also, there’s a much-grounded story tackling problems within the world, which again brings more villains that are not with immortality, so it’s a really cool balance between the two, in the graphic novel”.
When will ‘The Old Guard 2’ premiere?
With the COVID-19 pandemic, nothing is really in production and so far Netflix hasn’t officially ordered ‘The Old Guard 2’ yet. But since the first part got very positive reviews for its correct blend of action and character arcs, a sequel seems given.
As soon as ‘The Old Guard 2’ gets a green light, which is likely to be soon, Rucka could quickly adapt his graphic novel titled “The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied” into a script. But given the crisis, filming is unlikely to start for a while. The coronavirus pandemic has truly shut down most movie and TV productions and even if they are starting up again, it is relatively a slow process. It’s best to assume that even if everything goes right and happens soon, ‘The Old Guard’ sequel might not begin filming until mid- to late 2021. Which means that ‘The Old Guard 2’ would come out in 2022 at the earliest.
