Millie Bobby Brown Plays Enola Holmes Like A Boss, Yet Is Outcasted By Henry Cavill
Netflix’s ‘Enola Holmes’, the story of a sister, not any ordinary sister but a Holmes sister, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, is here to polarise the fan base.
Netflix’s ‘Enola Holmes’ stars Millie Bobby Brown in the lead role and Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes. What else do you want when Netflix comes up with a movie related to Sherlock, and which has two of the most wanted actors of the current times in it? Yet, this isn’t going to be an easy feat, and it was never meant to be. The movie is dealing with a character that was never a part of the original Sherlock world created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. ‘Enola Holmes’, as a sister, was added later in the world with the stories created by Nancy Springer. Henry Cavill is playing Sherlock in probably the hundred and fiftieth adaptation of the character. And Sherlock in this adaptation is not rude but sweet.
- Let’s begin with Enola’s words – First thing first, a short review.
- Millie Bobby Brown is an angel.
- Not Millie but Henry Cavill is the true star
Thus, there are clearly some things that won’t go well with the fans. So, let’s find out how Henry Cavill, Millie Bobby Brown, and the creators managed to pull it off.
Let’s begin with Enola’s words – First thing first, a short review.
When we said ‘polarising’, we said it for a reason. The movie is as fun as we expected it to be from the trailer. But – keep reading! Without spoiling much, it is a teenage romance story with a precise blend of the detective blood that runs in the Holmes’ family. It has a conscious backdrop story simultaneously running about the fight of feminism in England in that era, which works well enough. With some revelations, smart storytelling, fantasy settings, and phenomenal acting by all, the movie keeps you hooked.
Yet, what repels is the idea of excusing a character like Sherlock Holmes, for even a moment, from a world that exists just for him. While Millie Bobby Brown nails it as Enola Holmes, and Henry Cavill has done what he should have done, the movie does feel like it struggles hard to keep the frame away from Sherlock Holmes.
At instances, it feels like Sherlock should right away tear that camouflage of being a hunky-dory detective, which in-fact Henry Cavill pulls with perfection, and become what he always has been i.e. a high-functioning sociopath.
While the story and movie miss fits into the world of Holmes, it treats you with plenty of pleasures while being its own thing, and special thanks to Millie Bobby Brown for it. The experiment of breaking the 4th wall works pretty well with Millie’s adorable face looking right at us.
Wait! One more thing. Millie Bobby Brown’s pairing with Louis Partridge was straight out romantic on the faces of their characters. Oh, they were adorable together!
Millie Bobby Brown is an angel.
We never doubted Millie Bobby Brown; her brilliant portrayal of Eleven in ‘Stranger Things’ never allowed us to. But what Millie has done in Netflix’s ‘Enola Holmes’, alongside Henry Cavill, is worthy of all the praises.
The dedication and sincerity that she brought into the character, which is not to forget one of the Holmes, makes the movie truly her own. She has made Enola interesting, adorably witty, and a character we would love to see more of.
Millie is simply a treat to watch on screen for whatever she’s doing, even if that means mocking Sherlock Holmes. And when we say the movie feels off in trying to stay away from Sherlock Holmes, the credit definitely goes to Millie and her character to still keep us hooked to the action.
Once ‘Stranger Things’ is done, we would love to see Millie taking up more and more fun projects.
Not Millie but Henry Cavill is the true star.
Even though Millie is the Enola Holmes, and Henry Cavill is playing just a usual brother named Sherlock Holmes, he’s the true star of the movie. Don’t lie to us. Weren’t you keen on criticizing Henry for ruining Sherlock Holmes’ character before you watched the movie? Well, it’s obvious and popular.
New adaptations of such characters, especially if passed on from a big star to another big star, do not go well with the fans. However, Henry Cavill is as splendid as Sherlock in this movie should have been. No, you can not compare it to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, who has 13 episodes in his name, while this one has only a few minutes. And, for the same fact, if Henry Cavill’s Sherlock still stays with you, he has done some great job.
The ‘Man of Steel’ star had a tough job to pull off. After the likes of Robert Downey Jr, and Cumberbatch had brought the character to life in their own ways, redoing it, that too in a very different manner, was quite a task. Indeed, most of the fans won’t like this version of Sherlock. But regardless of how off-track Sherlock’s persona was in this movie, Henry Cavill made him charming and unconventionally Sherlock.
Also, the better part of the movie is the connection between Enola and Sherlock, and just imagine Enola facing Cumberbatch’s Sherlock instead of Herny’s gentle portrayal.
In the end:
The movie is not at all perfect if you are planning to watch it as something existing in Sherlock’s world. But, on its own and ‘Alone’, it is undoubtedly a fun watch. If you are a Sherlock fan, you should go in with a warning. Otherwise, for the fans of Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavil, and Enola Holmes, this is a treat.
So, if you are planning to watch it, tune into Netflix right away as it’s currently streaming.
