Will the show be back for another season? Here’s looking at the season 5 finale for some answers.
To say that the final episode of the fifth season of ‘The Originals’ was a tear-jerker would be to woefully understate it. Many hearts have been broken over the many deaths in the Vampire Diaries shared universe, but Klaus’ death, along with Elijah, hit a rare tender nerve for most fans. Must we say goodbye to the Mikaelson clan?

- How about ‘The Originals’ Season 6?
Premiering in 2013 as a spin-off of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, ‘The Originals‘ was set in New Orleans and followed vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson and his siblings Elijah and Rebekah in their endeavour to reclaim the city they built years ago and prepare for the birth of Hope, Klaus’ daughter who happens to be a tribrid and the first of its kind, with the mix of a werewolf, vampire, and witch bloodline.
However, Julie Plec, the creator of the show, was well-aware that the show must end soon before ‘The Originals’ Season 6 could be brought about, and so crafted the ending of ‘The Originals’ keeping certain ideas in mind. Here’s taking a look at how the events of the last episode of the series transpired.
One last dinner
Titled “When the Saints Come Marching In”, the final episode of the series begins with Klaus just about to kill himself in order to save Hope and destroy the Hollow’s magic. Before he can do that, she knocks him out and takes him back to New Orleans with Elijah so that he can at least wish a proper farewell to those who loved him.
The Mikaelson siblings then gather for one last meal together with Klaus. He tells Rebekah that Caroline has a cure for her curse. With Hope, he has one last father-daughter moment and then heads off with Elijah and Rebekah to commit vampire suicide. Meanwhile, Vincent agrees to be the father to Freya and Keelin’s child.
Klaus’ final redemption needed to involve Elijah
But the gut-wrenching twist only comes towards the end. Klaus attains a kind of redemption by deciding to stake himself. However, Elijah, seeing how Klaus has put his daughter – and, indeed, everyone else – before him in agreeing to sacrifice himself, decides to die alongside Klaus. In that way, Elijah fulfils his own life’s purpose. And so, the brothers stake each other, thereby destroying the dark magic and making sure that Hope has a safe future.

But why did Elijah also have to die? In order to have his own redemption and attain peace, Elijah needed to die next to his brother. Plec said,
“It felt like Elijah’s greatest plague was his codependent attachment to Klaus throughout the thousand years of their existence. As such, the most honourable thing for the most honourable man would be to hold his brother’s hand as they passed together, as a way of saying, ‘I’ve been by your side, I remain by your side'”.
How about ‘The Originals’Sseason 6?
Now that the main characters are dead, could there be a possible ‘The Originals’ Season 6?
It doesn’t seem likely, especially since the end of the storyline has been the springboard from which a whole new series – ‘Legacies‘ – is developed. The spin-off shares the same universe as that of ‘The Vampires Diaries’ and follows Hope as she is enrolled in a learning institute for students with supernatural abilities.
While we still nurse our broken hearts over the death of Klaus, we could watch the “legacy” he has left behind in Hope. Besides, nobody has remained dead for long in Mystic Falls or New Orleans. Perhaps there’s a chance that Klaus will live again?
