Simon becomes a daylighter
Simon Lewis went through many transformations in his course of adventures on ‘Shadowhunters’. A mundane first, his life took a turn once he entered into the adventure demon-hunting fantasy shadow world with Clary and the guys. The question of whether Simon would ever be able to join Netflix‘s shadowhunter gang in its truest sense ate away at the fans. The answer came soon enough as Simon began gradually transforming.
The first big change for him was becoming a vampire. That all started with Simon being killed by Camille, and then all there was left to do was turn him into a vamp, the cutest vamp if you ask us! After finding Simon dead, Raphael carries his body to the institute where Clary is left with only two choices – let him die or turn him into a vampire. Understandably, Clary chose the obvious; buried Simon, and waited for him to climb out of the grave. Simon follows suit and after emptying a few bags of blood dry, realizes the reality of his existence.
Simon being turned into a vampire, however, isn’t all that had happened to him. By the end of the season 2 finale, Simon finds himself feeling the sun on his skin after what must have been months. That meant Simon Lewis finally promoted to being a daylighter. The former mundane turned vampire seemed to have acquired his daylighter status after drinking the blood of Jace, who, at that time, was unaware of holding angelic blood.
Actor Alberto Rosende or our on-screen Simon talked about his changing status in the “shadow world” and what it meant for the character. He said, “His new Daylighter status, as we can see, completely changes his world once again. So he lived as a mundane, where he knew nothing about the Shadow World and everything was fine. Then he became a vampire and he was like ‘Oh, crap. What does this mean for me? How do I navigate this world?’ and then he started to figure that out, and then now he’s a Daylighter”. The newfound day lighter powers transpired almost as a burden to Simon. Since Simon Lewis had already covered turning into a vampire and later into a day lighter from a simple mundane, how long before he proceeds to become a shadowhunter?
Does Simon ascend to become a shadowhunter?
According to the original books by Cassandra Clare, Simon Lewis does ascend to become a shadowhunter. After serving as a hero in the Mortal and Dark wars, things took a turn and Simon lost his memories and immortality. Although Magnus managed to restore some of his memories, he recommended that Simon Lewis should become a shadowhunter himself. Agreeing with Magnus, Simon began attending the Shadowhunter Academy. Soon, his memories start coming back to him and, before we knew it, Simon ascended into a shadowhunter.
According to Magnus, Simon Lewis was the perfect candidate to become a shadowhunter because of his massive and significant contributions in the two wars. Moreover, the Clave had lost many shadowhunters in the Dark War. So, do the math! After Simon becomes a shadowhunter, he moves to New York and takes training with Clary to become each other’s “parabatai”, partners in life, death, and battle. BFF alert!
Cassandra Clare on why Simon deserves to become a shadowhunter
It was not just us, the fans and the characters, who recognised Simon as a potential shadowhunter. Writer Cassandra Clara had many reasons for why she thought Simon Lewis deserved to become a shadowhunter. Clara clearly explained in a “Tumbler” post that it was Simon’s destiny to be a shadowhunter since he had always wanted to be one.
When a reader asked the writer if Simon was written to ascend, implying shadowhunters as better than vampires, Clare very objectively replied,
“Simon deserved to become a Shadowhunter because it was something he wanted to be, not because it was something objectively better. Saying someone deserves something they want … not really the same as saying that what they don’t want is beneath them. If Simon had wanted to be a pilot and not a sailor, would that mean the text communicated ‘DAMN ALL SAILORS’?”
