Steve Carell’s Michael Scott was originally a Murderer in The Office.
The office redefined the sitcom genre in American Television, as it eliminated some cliché techniques like fake laughter tracks and studio audience. Another reason for The Office’s success was memorable and relatable characters. The Office was full of interesting characters, and one of them, the fan-favorite, was Michael Scott. Even though Michael Scott wasn’t welcomed by the audience in the beginning, but he became everyone’s favorite quickly. However, the one fact no one knows is that Steve Carell’s The Office character, Michael Scott, was originally meant to be a murderer. Showrunner Greg Daniels stepped in between to not let this idea actually go on-screen and ruin the show.
Michael Scott’s British counterpart was a cruel boss.
In original The Office, the British counterpart of Michael Scott, named David Brent, was actually much more on the darker side. David was equally impulsive, harassing, and humiliating towards his colleagues. However, unlike Michael, whose actions were originated from naïve and idiotic thoughts, David had comparatively more cruel and dark intentions. The team of The Office’s American version, including Greg and Steve, worked on to make David’s counterpart suitable for the American audience. They made him more likable and less dark. Yet, even after all the alterations, Steve Carell’s Michael Scott was meant to become a murderer in the later seasons of The Office.
Writers wanted to make Michael Scott a murderer – reveals Greg Daniels.
Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office, has revealed that the writers wanted to make Michael Scott, Steve Carell’s The Office character, a murderer. It was even finalized to an extent that they made the first draft around that idea.
In a recent interview with The Guardians, Daniels revealed:
“There were times where [the writers] would become enamored with a joke, and I’d have to put my foot down. For instance, they really wanted Michael to kill Meredith with his car. That was an early pitch, where he runs her over in the parking lot and then comes back, gets a tire iron, and finishes the job. I was like ‘You can’t do that, that’s crazy!’.”
Steve Carell’s Michael Scott was to be a murderer in The Office Season 4.
If you are The Office fan, you might remember the Season 4 premiere episode of The Office. The episode was named “Fire Run”, and in the opening of the episode, we saw Michael hitting Meredith Palmer (Kate Flannery) with his car while driving in the Dunder Mifflin parking lot. Meredith, an employee of Michael, survived the hit. But as revealed by Greg, the writers wanted to go further than that and wanted to make Michael a murderer with some cruel plans brooding inside his idiotic head.
Without Daniels stepping in between to stop the writers from messing around, the show would have been totally different after Season 4, and probably not for good.
