‘Dickinson’ – What’s the show about?
Fans of ‘Dickinson’ have been quite lucky with regards to the quick season premieres of the show and the wait was even shorter before the show was renewed for season 3. ‘Dickinson’, by Apple TV+, is a highly inventive comedy-drama series following the life of writer Emily Dickinson. Although mostly fictionalized, the series follows the young writer as she embarks on the journey of making her voice heard, her words count, and her truth told. She sets out to get her poetry published and, as is evident right from the beginning of the series, she is a rebel on a mission. That being said, the obvious disclaimer should be that the interpretation of Dickinson’s private life in the show should not be taken on its face value and requires much more thought and scrutiny than what meets the eye.

In other words, ‘Dickinson‘ finds its inspiration in the poetry of Emily Dickinson and builds the plot around the lesser-known nooks and corners of her life. In fact, series creator Alena Smith has been very open about how she took the liberty of inventing her own Emily Dickinson. According to her, the series’ version of Dickinson’s life should not be taken as the gospel truth. She told “Vulture”,
“Everyone’s free to invent their own Emily Dickinson, and this is mine. I don’t in any way say it’s the authoritative version”.
‘Dickinson’ has impeccably managed to blend in history and comedy in a period drama and that’s just one of the reasons why fans can’t have enough of the show. The popularity of the show has earned its season renewals back to back, and just like that ‘Dickinson’ was renewed for season 3 even before season 2 could end.
‘Dickinson’ renewed for season 3
To say the truth, ‘Dickinson’ being renewed for season 3 should not even come across as a surprise, since Apple TV+ decided to surprise the fans even before season 2 was launched. Back in October 2020, while talks of season 2 premiering in 2021 were making the rounds, Apple TV+ had already renewed ‘Dickinson’ for season 3. Season 3 will, of course, see Hailee Steinfeld return as Emily Dickinson. Season 2 of the series premiered on January 8, 2021, and has already dropped the first block of episodes, while fans wait for the next ones. Season 2 reunited the original cast from season 1 including Anna Baryshnikov, Jane Krakowski, Toby Huss, Ella Hunt, and Adrian Blake Enscoe.
The big news, however, is that even though season 3 of ‘Dickinson’ has just been renewed, the script is already in the works. Creator Alena Smith also explained how the pandemic experience had influenced the season 3 script greatly. She told “T&C”,
“[Smith] didn’t know that when I started writing a show about Emily Dickinson that we’d be living through a situation that trapped everybody in their own houses. We were writing season three over the summer and fall in the pandemic, and I would say that that experience certainly came to bear on the writing of season three”.
‘Dickinson’ Season 3 release date
Based on the premiere schedule history of ‘Dickinson’, season 3 could release anytime during the later part of 2021 or early 2022. The first season of the series had come out on November 1, 2019, and season 2 was launched on January 8, 2021. Judging from this, the recently renewed season 3 of ‘Dickinson’ could be expected later this year or next year at the earliest.
However, it should be taken into account that we are not living in normal times. The Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on every industry including the entertainment industry. So, all of it is merely a point of conjecture at this moment. Nevertheless, season 3 of ‘Dickinson’ is up and about, and will definitely make its way onto your screens. Until then, hold your horses!
