So here’s everything you need to know from the renewal status, plot, casting news, to the potential release dates of ‘Dead to Me’ Season 3.
What makes the series so popular?
‘Dead to Me’, which is a Netflix Original, black-comedy series created by Liz Feldman, quickly became one of the most-watched comedy series on Netflix, after enjoying a viewership of over 30 million in its first season.
The dark comedy series revolves around the lives of two grieving women, who bond through therapy. But the soul of the series belongs to the chemistry between Christina Applegate, who plays Jen, and Linda Cardellini, who stars as Judy. The onscreen presence of these women has been electric and they fit perfectly in this hilarious comedy, and heart-wrenching drama.
When will the third season of ‘Dead to Me’ air?
Both seasons of the show arrived in early May 2019 and 2020. But it’s not clear whether filming will be pushed back due to the on-going Covid-19 crisis. We have been seeing how the production of several shows and movies have stalled because of the current situation, and it’s not yet clear when the productions will resume.
But fans can still expect the third instalment to release sometime in May 2021. However, there have been no official announcements regarding the release date of season 3.
Who all can we expect in the third season?
Apart from the central characters played by Jen and Judy, Steve’s semi-identical twin brother. Ben, played by James Marsden, Jen’s children Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler), police detective Ana Perez (Diana-Maria Riva), Nick (Brandon Scott), the cop that
Judy dated, Jen’s neighbour Karen (Suzy Nakamura), Jen’s former real estate partner Christopher (Max Jenkins), Jen’s mother-in-law Lorna (Valerie Mahaffey), and Pastor Wayne (Keong Sim), the grief support group leader could all be expected to reprise their roles.
What may happen in the third season of Dead to Me?
Season 1 and Season 2 each focused on one character’s secret–the first being that Judy was involved with the accident that killed Jen’s husband, and the second that Jen didn’t actually kill Steve in self-defence. But from the looks of it, season 3 is all set to be about somebody else’s secret.
Showrunner Liz Feldman told a leading entertainment website that “There’s some more story to tell. I know exactly what I would want to do for the third season, especially now that you know how Season 2 ends. Now there’s somebody else with a secret”. She’s likely pointing at Ben, who after crashing into Jen and Judy while driving under the influence, drove away from the scene. Feldman also explained how she’s keen on continuing to explore the “constant give and take off, do you tell somebody something if you know it will hurt them?”
This explains that fans can expect the next instalment to focus on Ben’s reckoning with abandoning the accident spot, potentially injuring Jen who he was romantically involved in, and the legal consequences that can follow. On the other hand, detective Perez may have let Jen go after she confessed to killing Steve. But, now that the authorities found his body and the investigation is still on, the evidence is definitely mounting up against them. The ladies may have to cut some sort of deal with Ben so the two can stay tight-lipped about their respective crimes.
With that, season 3 could also bring back Steve’s money-laundering scheme and connection to the Greek mafia. Which may, in turn, introduce the viewers to the shady characters Steve was working with when he was alive. With all of the road-cams in their neighborhood, Jen and Judy will have to try harder than before to keep their secrets.
