‘Community’ – A fine blend of dark humour
The NBC sitcom ‘Community’ premiered on the network in 2009 and had a smooth run for five seasons before it wrapped up in 2015 with a final sixth season. The show follows the life of Jeff Winger, played by the talented Joel McHale, and his bunch of misfit community college friends. After having been disbarred from practising law because of fraudulent college qualifications, Jeff Winger joins a community college to finally get his hands on a real degree to improve his situation. The community college brings into Jeff’s life a bunch of amusing and entertaining characters, who make his college experience a riotous one.
‘Community’ became popular with the audience overnight supported by a bomb cast that includes acting stalwarts like Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong, and Alison Brie. The popularity of ‘Community’ still runs solid especially after it entered Netflix and Hulu. Undoubtedly, given the high spirited and bubbly content of the show, fans, as well as the stars, are hoping and demanding a movie reboot for ‘Community’.
‘Community’ stars talk about a movie reboot
In ‘Community’ Season 2’s episode “Paradigms of Human Memory”, the show used the line “six seasons and a movie” to poke fun at ‘The Cape’, a series that was cancelled sooner than anticipated. The fans of ‘Community’ picked the line soon enough to turn it into a catchphrase, anticipating six seasons and a movie for the show itself. Interestingly, the show ran for six seasons and now, the possibility of a movie reboot seems to be in the talks. It has been a long wait for the fans, but the stars of ‘Community’ have hinted at a movie reboot.
In an exclusive interview to “Popculture”, Yvette Nicole Brown talked about the high chances of a ‘Community’ movie happening. She said, “I’ve always joked and said that if we were going to do it, now would have been the time because everybody’s free. If you’re trying to get Donald Glover, you better get him during the pandemic. But that joke aside, 100% we’re going to do it”. It doesn’t get better than that, does it?
“It’s always been about scheduling and never desires. As soon as Dan writes it or one of the other great writers writes it, and we all can find a time on this calendar — where everybody can set aside a month to do it — 100% we would do it”, the actress continued.
‘Community’ stars are ready to go all-in on the show’s movie reboot as soon as creator Dan Harmon (who has a lot on his plate right now) is ready. Joel McHale revealed on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” that there is a “good chance” of a ‘Community’ movie happening, more so because Dan Harmon has been optimistic when asked about the same.
Could the amazing ‘Community’ cast be back?
Earlier this year, Dan Harmon, creator of ‘Community’, provided an affirmative sign about conversations happening between stars regarding a movie reboot.
A reunion movie is on the cards as Harmon told “The Wrap”: “I can say that there are conversations happening that people would want to be happening and that I’m very, very excited about the coming months.”
While this has ignited significant hope among the fans for the return of ‘Community’ with a movie reboot, the question is if the initial cast will come back. As known, towards the end of the show’s run, the cast changed significantly than what it was at its start. Chevy Chase left the show ahead of season 5 and Donald Glover quit in between season 5 episodes. Yvette Nicole Brown too decided to discontinue after season 5. Although it seems far-fetched to figure out who returns and who doesn’t, Donald Glover seems to be on board with the movie reboot. Nevertheless, get your study group ready, because it’s going to be “six seasons and a movie”!
