Are you still wondering why ‘Castle’ Season 9 stands cancelled? We’ve got three reasons why the audience won’t be seeing Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in their crime-solving roles anymore.
Debuted in 2016, ‘Castle’ is an American crime-drama TV series which aired for a total of 8 seasons. Despite several cast members having signed on for the ninth season, it was eventually announced that Castle would not be returning for the hopeful instalment.
- Stana Katic and Tamala Jones quit the show
- The discernible tension between the network and the show
- The budget was a major issue
- The possibility of a revival
Whether it is bad ratings, main casts leaving the show, or bad critical response, there are numerous reasons why shows get cancelled. Now, why exactly did ‘Castle’ get cancelled has been up for questioning. Here are 3 top reasons explaining why the show was discontinued. Read on to know more.
1. Stana Katic and Tamala Jones quit the show
Stana Katic and Tamala Jones exiting the show was a major shock to fans. First and foremost, it was heartbreaking for fans to hear that their favourite on-screen crime-solving couple “Caskett” won’t be seen together anymore.
It wasn’t like Katic or Jones were firedbecause of some misbehaviour or lack of performance, it was just an unfortunate unavoidable situation that left the showrunners with no choice but to let go off two of the best talents on the show. So, why exactly did the two actress bid farewell to ‘Castle’?
2. The budget was a major issue
In case you didn’t know already or haven’t figured it out, the budget was a major issue for the showrunners because of which great talents like Stana Katic and Tamala Jones were not offered a new contract after their current one had ended. Still confused? Let me break it down for you.
Almost nearing the end of season 8, showrunner Andrew W. Marlowe had announced that if everything worked in their favour, season 9 would most certainly happen. But to be safe, the cast and crew filmed two different endings- one that would be left at a cliffhanger and the other with “Caskett” living happily ever after.
It wasn’t too long after the season finale that Nathan Fillion and many others were offered an extended contract leaving behind, you guessed it right, Stana Katic. The American actress, as expressed in an interview, has her doubts about what exactly went wrong.
“I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down. It hurt and it was a harsh ending.”
We totally agree with you, Stana! Furthermore, if Fillion could’ve been offered an extended contract, would it have been such a pain to offer one to Katic, as well?
3. The discernible tension between the network and the show
Not offering the lead actress the same contract as the lead actor could seem a little sexist to the audience. While that could be true in some sense, the show would’ve ended regardless of the controversies that lay with it.
According to numerous online sources, throughout the show’s running, ABC didn’t always see eye-to-eye with the ‘Castle’ team. Whether it was the budgeting or undeniable tension between the casts, there were hints that things would eventually get a little out of hand.
The possibility of a revival
Back in 2016, fans were beyond exhilarated upon hearing the announcement of a possible season 9. But all went down in vain when the showrunner and network shared that season 8 is all that fans were getting, and nothing more.
But in 2020, surprise renewals and reboots for shows that were once “called off for the better” are now making a comeback with fresh storylines and cast, and fans are definitely keeping their fingers crossed for ‘Castle’ as well.
