Is ABC ready to revive its hit show, Castle for a season 9?
Produced by ABC Studios and Beacon Pictures, the popular police-procedural comedy-drama, Castle remained a fan favourite throughout its run of 8 seasons. Maintaining impressive ratings that averaged at 10 million viewers per season, the series found widespread success. Its leading actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic received unprecedented love from fans and critics alike for their exquisite onscreen chemistry.

- Season 9: Is it a possibility?
Despite a season 9 being in talks, ABC decided to cancel the series after eight seasons in 2016, citing budget cuts as the primary reason. But is the network set to bring back the series with an all new cast soon?
Castle: An uptight detective meets a happy-go-lucky writer
Created by Andrew W. Marlowe, Castle superbly combined elements of crime, drama, and comedy together. Its ability to create light-hearted conversations even during intense scenes was what attracted viewers in the first place. The series was also always in news for the on-screen chemistry between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, a major selling point of the show.
The series revolved around homicide detective Kate Beckett (Katic) who was forced to work with a carefree writer Richard Castle (Fillion), a mystery novelist after a crime inspired by one of his novels takes place. Despite hating Castle at the beginning, Beckett eventually warmed up to him and Castle soon became a regular consultant for the NYPD and found romance with her.
Castle opened to a great response in 2009 and saw good ratings throughout its telecast. There was news that the show would be back for a season 9, but with Katic and Tamala Jones refusing to return for another season and other internal troubles, ABC decided to cancel the show after its eighth season.
The bemusing off-screen chaos during its final season
All those who were watching Castle during its original run, became quite familiar with the chaos surrounding season 8 and the possibility of a season 9 in 2016.
At the end of season seven, the contracts of the cast members expired, and they all decided to renew them for another season. It was rumoured that during the shooting of season 8, the equation between Fillion and Katic was so bad that they were attending counselling together. In 2016, the bosses as ABC started discussing a prospective season 9, but it is said that Katic quit because of her sour relationship with her leading man and the producers. Katic expressed though her social media handle at the time of her exit, “Rather than distract from what was an amazing experience I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”
With that in mind, the makers first thought of going ahead with a new season without Katic but then struck down that idea and started conceptualising a premise without the old cast members. However, at the end all these talks fell through and the series was cancelled for good.
Due to this hasty decision, the makers, instead of ending the series on a strong note with a cliff hanger, as originally intended, were forced to end with a back-up ending. The entire season witnessed the two leads looking for a dangerous entity called LokSat to defeat him. In the finale, they found out who was leading the entity and took him down, but were double-crossed by their own informant who shot them. But the series had a happy ending as it cut to seven years in the future where both Beckett and Castle were alive and well, taking care of their three children together.
Season 9: Is it a possibility?
It just might be, but with a completely different team. In 2016 itself, the makers were deliberating on renewing the show with a new cast. Back then, Alexi Hawley had said in an interview, “There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does.”
In the years to come, if the makers decide to produce a season 9 it would only happen with a new cast. The poor relationship between Fillion and Katic makes it very unlikely for these two to be seen together again on-screen. Fans can simply wait and see what the executives at ABC decide regarding the show, but for now there no season 9 in the works.
