What the showrunner said
Jon Favreau, who serves as Disney and ‘The Mandalorian’ showrunner, has clearly emphasized that these two men are different. The clarification might be disappointing for Boba Fett fans who were looking for some kind of a connection between the two series.
The studio described this new character as different from Boba Fett and his father, Jango. They both feature in the films:
“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe.”
But there’s some good news despite this. The studio doesn’t preclude a Boba Fett cameo. The end of the fifth episode of the series hinted that Boba Fett, the bounty hunter, may still make an appearance in the show.
Before that, let’s find out the difference between the unnamed Mandalorian, played by ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Pedro Pascal and Boba Fett.
Why Boba Fett is not a Mandalorian?
It is true that both the characters wear the same armour of the planet Mandalore. But this doesn’t make Boba Fett a true Mandalorian, technically.

If we go back to the second episode of ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’, we will get the answer. George Lucas mentioned that Boba Fett is a clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. Boba Fett was raised by Jango Fett, who took care of him as his son on the planet of Kamino. Even though Boba Fett is taught how the Mandalorians live and, moreover, he wears the armour of the bounty hunters on that planet, as a clone, he hasn’t truly grown up in the Mandalorian culture.
According to Jon Favreau, the Mandalorian character played by Pedro Pascal is a traditional Mandalorian. He told “Entertainment Weekly”,
“Our guy is a Mandalorian, and we definitely explore the culture of the Mandalorian”.
The new Mandalorian operate in another time period
Boba Fett grew up when the empire ruled the galaxy, primarily for Jabba the Hutt, during the time of the prequel movies.
Boba Fett is unceremoniously killed by Han Solo (Spoiler Alert!), in ‘Return of the Jedi’. This happens when Solo blindly knocks him into the Sarlacc pit, presumably to be eaten by the monster that swallows people whole.

On the other hand, the Mandalorian, played by Pascal, is operating in the years after Boba Fett’s death. When the empire falls in the fourth episode of the ‘Return of the Jedi’, the galaxy lands into turmoil. There’s a situation of anarchy, especially in the far-flung regions. This is the time when the new series introduces us to Pascal’s Mandalorian, long before the events of Episode VII – “The Force Awakens”.
Favreau mentioned to “EW” in the same interview,
“Our guy is operating in a much more unforgiving landscape”. The only rule that is operating is “might is right”.
That being said, it is also true that it’s only been five years since Boba Fett supposedly died on Tatooine. The brief appearance of the armoured boots, that don’t belong to the titular hero on that planet in the fifth episode, could indicate that Boba Fett not only survived the Sarlacc pit but is still a bounty hunter.
Boba Fett was a villain. ‘The Mandalorian’ is more complicated.
It is still not clear whether the Mandalorian in ‘The Mandalorian’ will be a hero or a villain. Pascal has suggested that his character will have shades of grey.
“Ultimately, he wants to do the right thing, but his duties could very much be in conflict with his destiny”.
Will Boba Fett do a cameo in the show?
A crazy lot of fans on the internet believe that Boba Fett is still alive. Even though he is not a true Mandalorian, he is familiar with their culture. There is still a slight chance that Boba Fett will eventually appear in the show undead. We can expect something similar to the twin Spider-Man sequence.
