- Enola Holmes: Millie Bobby Brown Shines
- The Holmes Women: Eurus or Enola?
‘Enola Holmes’ celebrates the life of Sherlock’s sister, themes of feminism, woman empowerment and coming into your own as a young person. But, it is not the only adaptation with Sherlock’s sister in it.
Eurus Holmes, another sister of Sherlock Holmes, has also graced our TV screen before.
Let’s take a look at how the movie fared, and which adaptation with the sister fared better.
Enola Holmes: What Is It About?
The movie stars ‘Stranger Things’ famed young actress Millie Bobby Brown and focuses on a young Enola Holmes, with other characters like Sherlock Holmes played by Henry Cavill, elder brother Mycroft Holmes played by Sam Claflin, and the mother Eudoria Holmes played by Helena Bohman Carter.
In the movie, a young Enola Holmes finds herself abandoned after her mother disappears in the middle of the night. But her mother leaves her with clues to find her, and with them to find her freedom.
Enola spends the movie trying to escape her brother Mycroft’s decision to school and discipline her, along with finding her mother. Her brother is intent on removing all traces of independence and freedom she had embraced by growing up with a feminist mother who was way ahead of her times.
So, how did the movie fare?
Enola Holmes: Millie Bobby Brown Shines
The movie made with reasonable care and an equally promising premise failed to deliver on the promise of exciting adventures for the audience. The character, Enola Holmes, based on the series of novels by Nancy Springer centres around the first book, “The Case of the Missing Marquess.”
The pro-women agenda of the movie, lathered with feminist undertones were a welcome change with the character of Sherlock Holmes. Still, the film didn’t carry out the message in the most exciting way possible.
Although Millie Bobby Brown, both an actor and producer of the film played her part well and received positive reviews from the critics, there is something about her character that didn’t sit right with the audience.
Maybe because Enola Holmes has an elder darker Holmes sister to compare with?
The Holmes Women: Eurus or Enola?
Eurus Holmes first appeared on BBC’s hit show ‘Sherlock’ in the fourth season (2010-2017). Eurus is one year younger than her brother Sherlock and was the antagonist of the episode “The Final Episode.” She was locked up in the high-security prison since childhood and was considered a genius who could manipulate people to her will to the extent of even ‘re-programming’ them.
Which Sherlock Holmes are you? (Quiz)
Eurus is the complete opposite of Enola, who instead of using her intellect for good used it be as evil as possible. She was too “dark” and too-short lived to be given space to grow and understand, and the audience were left with a half-ended broken mess. Enola and Eurus have some similar traits, the most obvious one being the meaning of their names.
Enola has carried out the legacy more in time with how the modern women of the world are, real, happy with being themselves and Eurus overtly dark character still has some catching up to do.
And, of course, Millie Bobby Brown won our hearts with the quirky-fourth wall breaking and a whole lot of grins.
