The ‘Iron Mask’ is a Russian-Chinese fantasy film. Also known as ‘Viy 2: Journey to China’, the movie got released in the United States. Directed by Russian filmmaker Oleg Stepchenko, the movie is a follow-up to his 2014 film ‘Viy’. The film got inspired by Nikolai Gogol’s novella “Viy”, about a devilish creature with long eyelids, written in the nineteenth century. Despite the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, the film focuses primarily on the ‘Iron Mask’.

‘Iron Mask’s’ huge success!
‘Iron Mask’ stars Jason Flemyng and Charles Dance, who reprised their roles in ‘Viy’ in 2014. However, the recently released movie includes Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Helen Yao. The film was a huge success in Russia, grossing the equivalent of $34 million in the United States. It later got re-released in the United States under the title ‘Forbidden Empire’. Its success prompted the producers to enlist the help of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan.
The film ‘Iron Mask’, set in the 18th century, follows cartographer Jonathan Green on a scientific and mystical journey. Jonathan travels to Moscow in his carriage after leaving Ukraine. But he is quickly deposed by the ruthless, corrupt government, which sends him to China on a cartography expedition with former prisoner Cheng Lan (Xingtong Yao) as his assistant. Jonathan believes Cheng Lan is a Russian-held boy, but she is actually a princess linked to an ancient dragon who lives in a remote Chinese village.

Jackie Chan appears as Master, a kung fu master who must escape from the maniacal James Hook, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, to save his homeland from certain doom. His mission entails delivering a sacred talisman to his daughter in order for her to summon and control a massive mythical dragon. Anna Churina reprises her role as Jonathan’s fiancée, Emma. She embarks on a quest to find Jonathan, but she requires the assistance of Peter the Great (Yuri Kolokolnikov), who got imprisoned in the Tower of London alongside the Master.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan do have one fight scene. At least, which is what the majority of viewers will want from this movie, but it is quite underwhelming. Jackie Chan’s character comes face to face with Captain James Hook, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, an English sea pirate seemingly inspired by Captain Hook from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.
James Hook is a historical relic collector, as evidenced by his refusal to let Jackie Chan use any of his weapons in their fight. The popular stars slug for forty-five minutes, which helps to keep the viewers interested.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan are 73 and 66 years old, respectively. Hence, DKODING believes that expecting an action-packed blockbuster reminiscent of their prime days would be foolish. But after seeing the trailer for ‘Iron Mask’, many people who had high expectations have been disappointed. But, despite your high expectations for Chan and Schwarzenegger, you would surely not turn off ‘Iron Mask’ when their parts get done.

‘Iron Mask’ production wrapped in February 2017 after lengthy shoots in Russia, China, and the United Kingdom. Before its release, the film was reportedly put on hold for two years due to disagreements between the joint producers. ‘Iron Mask’ began filming in 2015. Early reports indicated that Chan, Jason Statham, and Steven Segal would appear in the film. It got confirmed in November 2016 that Jackie Chan would co-star with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But DKODING certainly believes if Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan collaborated on a film in the ‘90s, it would have been at the height of both stars’ fame. ‘Iron Mask’ may have arrived 20 years too late for their die-hard fans. But many fans of the stars would be happy to see them face off each other in the ‘Iron Mask’.
