The popular sitcom received the Peabody award in 2006 amongst others, including Emmys, Humanitas Prize, BET Awards and more. NBC remained home to the series for seven seasons before giving way to ABC to develop the last 2 seasons. A decade after its last episode aired, is NBC set to bring the series back for a season 10?
Scrubs: The hilarious adventures at Sacred Heart Hospital
Created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs was a side-splitting situational comedy following the lives of people working at a fictional teaching hospital called the Sacred Heart Hospital. The title came from surgical scrubs and is a phrase used for a person in the lower ranks.
The series was from Dr John Michael “J.D.” Dorian’s (Zach Braff) point of view during the first eight seasons as he navigated his way through friendships, relationships, and the intenseness of working at the hospital.
Scrubs starred Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Neil Flynn, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes in main roles in the first 8 seasons and Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley and Dave Franco in season 9.

The series gained widespread attention and praise for its whimsical dream sequences, in which the otherwise shy and awkward John came alive in the wildest and wackiest ways. Scrubs was one of its kind and created some of the quirkiest comic situations on American television during its 8-year long span.
Cancellation, syndication and retooling
During the seventh season of the show, the Writers Guild of America went on a strike, halting the production of the series. NBC soon decided to leave the show on a hiatus, which is when ABC stepped in and decided to revive the series for an eighth season.
The last episode of season 8, My Finale, was supposed to be the final episode but it was soon announced that Scrubs would be returning for another season. The makers received backlash from the public when they first announced that they would be making significant changes in the plot and cast of the series. But despite the critique, they went ahead and introduced a new cast with season 9, which did not go down too well with its viewers.
Braff announced on his Facebook page on March 22, 2010 that the series had been cancelled, writing, “Many of you have asked, so here it is: it appears that ‘New Scrubs’, ‘Scrubs 2.0’, ‘Scrubs with New Kids’, ‘Scrubbier’, ‘Scrubs without JD’ is no more. It was worth a try, but alas… it didn’t work.”
Is a revival happening?
In 2018, the cast reunited at the Vulture Fest which led Braff to upload a picture on his Twitter handle with the caption, “Season 10?”
At the fest, show-runner Bill Lawrence spoke to the audience and explained why he wasn’t ready to bring the show back for a season 10 saying, “I would do anything to get to work with not only this group (but the entire crew)… it was the best time in my life, (but) sometimes reboots – not all the time – feel like a money grab.” However, he did not shoot down the idea of doing a special or a movie reboot in the future.
He expressed,
“If we ever do it, we’ll do it as a short little movie or something else. I think the problem from me is I would just want to see where everyone is. I would want to see where their marriages are (as opposed to a huge event).”
Even though a season 10 is not happening, it doesn’t mean that the series will not be back in some other shape or form in the near future. Considering how close the cast and crew members are, a reboot unquestionably seems to be in their to-do list.
