‘Castle Rock’ has made subtle references to Stephen King’s characters in the previous seasons, but is a more intense crossover in the works? Let’s find out!
‘Castle Rock’ is the closest thing we’ll ever have to a King novel not written by the master himself. The expansive body of Stephen King’s work hovers in the shadow of ‘Castle Rock’ and drives the show’s still-mysterious story, to be sure, but the trace of his writing is also embedded deep in its details.

Why ‘Castle Rock’ serves as the central location from Stephen King’s universe?
Hulu series ‘Castle Rock’ is an original story from co-creators Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason that simply utilizes familiar King locations and characters. Whether you’re a longtime reader of Stephen King books or a longtime viewer of King-based films, you will easily notice few Easter eggs along the way, even if you’re not trying.
Why did the creators (Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason) choose ‘Castle Rock’ as the central location of the story? The main reason could be that while the stories set in Derry and Jerusalem’s Lot lean more heavily on the supernatural, those that take place in ‘Castle Rock’ seem to focus more on the townspeople themselves.
Sam explained the choice of Castle Town for the TV series,
“I mean, it’s been visited by two serial killers, a homicidal rabid dog, a demonic truck, the devil hung out there for a while, and there are a handful of haunted houses”.

He further added, “You start to think, why does the town still exist? And that was a provocative question for us too, and it seemed interesting”.
Theories about an epic crossover event with Stephen King’s characters
While we are not sure about a potential season 3, there have been speculations and rumours about it. It is rumoured that King himself will make an appearance in the crossover event on a possible 3rd season of ‘Castle Rock’. After all, he has done it in the past. And that would be an icing on the cake!
Stephen King’s appearance in ‘Castle Rock’, considering that he made himself a character in his universe in “The Dark Tower” novels, would be worth watching. There’s a meta-fictional aspect of the canon that Shaw and Thomason might be interested in exploring down the road.
Ultimately, it’s this kind of attention to detail and willingness to celebrate what’s come before that makes ‘Castle Rock’ such an intriguing project. This is the reason why the crossover event, if there is indeed one, has the potential to stupendously surpass all previous crossovers on Hulu.
Any news about season 3?
As far as ‘Castle Rock’ Season 3 is concerned, there’s no official confirmation or release date yet. The first season came in late July of 2018, while the second season premiered in late October of 2019, providing a sizable gap.
Following the pattern, if the show were to be renewed, it would have come out in the second half of 2020. But considering there is no official confirmation about the renewal yet, it is highly unlikely.
Fans think that the anthology nature of ‘Castle Rock’ makes the potential epic crossover very promising.
We can’t contain our excitement and hope and pray that the network quickly approves another season. Till then, share your theories with us in the comments section below.
