Out with the ‘70s and in with the ‘90s
According to rumours, That ‘70s Show is returning with a reboot, which would be set in the ‘90s. The original show was set in the ‘70s, although it had premiered in 1998. That was perhaps, what was so special about the show. It had all the best references from the history of the ‘70s decade, which played a big role in the retention of the audience.
That ‘70s Show followed Eric and his teenage friends as they navigated through adolescent lives and relationships. The nostalgia of the show appealed to the audience who had spent their teenage in the ‘70s, helping it widen its horizon.

The classic American sitcom had to quit the screens after two of their major characters, Topher Gace and Ashton Kutcher left the show looking to explore better opportunities in Hollywood.
It makes sense that the reboot of That ‘70s Show should be set in the ‘90s mainly because the whole gang would have been in their mid lives. The fans would love to know how Eric and Donna’s future has turned out, what has been the situation with Kitty and Red, and how life has been treating the gang in general.
The ‘90s would be the perfect timeline for the reboot since most of the target audience or the original viewers of the show belong to the ‘90s. This would help the audience build a better connection with the characters’ stories as well as the timeline.
The fans and the cast have spoken
Fans have confirmed wanting to see the That ‘70s Show reboot set in the ‘90s. A fan wrote on “Reddit”, “Honestly if they could get all characters back, nice and healthy…I would be down! 70’s show was made in the 90’s…so they could do a 20 year change up and do a “That 90’s show” and do 90’s things. Maybe Donna Eric are married with kids. Kelso still searching, Fez and Jackie…uuhh trying to show interracial relationships are cool. Hyde still being a stoner badass…Just get it on Netflix and they’ll be famous again.”
Most of the original cast members are willing to come back for the reboot. While some would come back no matter what, others are dancing on the edge of a “maybe”. Topher Grace told The Hollywood Reporter, “I would do it for sure because that was a very wonderful time for us. For me, I’d do it if no one ever saw it. Just ’cause it would be great to hang out with them for a week or something.”
On the contrary, Laura Prepon, the actress who played Donna, feels coming back for the reboot would be a bad idea. She told Popculture, “I don’t think so. I mean, look, I love that show… That show was so special to me, but it’s kind of like in a time capsule.” She explained, “It’s kind of like, someone who has a great experience at college. You graduate, and I don’t think you’d want to go back through college again and go through the stuff, but you really are like, ‘Wow, what an experience that moulded me in so many different ways.’”
Release confirmation for the reboot
Major characters like Donna refusing to come back could mean a new cast for the reboot of That ‘70s Show. It would be impossible to imagine the show without Donna, albeit Mila Kunis has uttered a hopeful “maybe”.
Nothing about the reboot of That ‘70s Show has been confirmed yet. However, it is definitely in the talks. Judging by the rate at which classic shows are being revived, a reboot wouldn’t be far away.
