12 Monkeys ventured into a deadly combination of racing against time to save the world.
But it always raised the question: who are the 12 monkeys in the series?
’12 Monkeys’ is a science fiction mystery series. It is based after the movie of the same name starring Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, and more. Developed by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, this series hit the screens in the year 2015 and concluded in 2018. This was a time-travel series which focused upon an organization that called itself ‘Army of 12 monkeys,’ and was responsible for the spread of a deadly virus in the past, something which the people in the future are trying to curb.
Thus, Cole, the main character who is from 2043, travels back in time to prevent the spread of this virus which could otherwise lead to the end of the human race.
- Time travel had been a part of many intriguing series
- Much before Dark entered the threshold, there was 12 Monkeys
This raises the question, who exactly were the 12 monkeys?
Or were there any monkeys in the ’12 Monkeys’?
Theoretically, chimps are our ancestors. But were there actual monkeys in the ’12 Monkeys?’
Or is it a metaphor that plays with everything in existence? Let’s figure it all out, here.
Monkeying around time
Imagine a virus that would kill around 7 billion people across the world. 12 Monkeys are the ones responsible for spreading the same, in the year 2015, due to which humans are almost dwindling, back in the year 2043. To prevent the virus at its source, James Cole goes back into the past to confront the Army of the 12 Monkeys, the ones who are responsible for spreading the virus in the first place.
The show has an interesting timeline going throughout with people meeting their past and future selves yet maintaining a distance. The characters have an interesting shade of grey, with them being antagonists at some point of time and protagonist at another. The series captures the essence of it all and brings it to a closing loop at the end of it where the organization has a bigger goal in mind.
From Theodore Deacon and Jose Ramse whose original journeys start in 2043 to Jennifer Goines and Doctor Cassandra Railly who start off from 2015, everyone is tangled in some way or the other. Unleashing the virus today to affect the future of an entire species tomorrow is no easy task, and The Army of the 12 Monkeys is equipped to do that. They pick the best and eliminate the threats, and it is no monkey’s job. They may name themselves so to give a mocking tribute to the evolution of the tribe they are eliminating, but they are well-versed with what they do. Their grip on time proves that.
12 Monkeys: What’s next for the Netflix show?
The series has ended well, closing in all the loops, and even, surprisingly, managing to save the protagonist Cole, whose existence doesn’t really get wiped off in all the timelines. Thus, in a way, the series does give Cole and Cassie their own happily ever after, with faint memories keeping alive the adventure they lived together.
The monkeys in 12 Monkeys are not there physically, but kind of pertain to the mimicry of time that it is. As time flows to and fro jumping through hoops, it meddles with various lives, and takes no responsibility for it. Quite monkey-like, if you look at it.
You can watch the series on Netflix and then maybe, enjoy creating some conflicting comparisons with another Netflix time travel hit, Dark.
