It might sound unbelievable, but there are a bunch of Instagram influencers who are using face masks as bikinis, known as ‘quarankinis’, as part of a shocking new viral trend that is sweeping social media. Not only is this trend stupid and crass, it is going viral at a time when COVID-19 has claimed almost 76,383 lives across the globe.

What is quarankini?
A group of young Instagram influencers are using face masks as bikini and posting their selfies on the social media. This trend is called quarankini and is sparking fury both on the news media as well as social media.
Russian model Yulia Ushakova is one of them who gave a distasteful spin to the pandemic by covering her private parts with face masks. She has posted her picture with caption—“I ordered a new trend for the swimming season 2020 … Built-in valves make breathing easier, but it needs to be changed every two hours!”
Another of these “covidiots” is German model Katja, who has also posted her picture of using the essential medical supply as a bikini.
When did this trend start?
According to a report in Daily Mail, this bizarre trend started when World Health Organization asked young and healthy people not to wear masks and instead let them be used by doctors and other healthcare professionals or coronavirus positive patients who need them.

The reason why WHO came with this suggestion was due to a dearth of masks and other protective gear for healthcare workers across the globe. Whatever maybe the reason for WHO’s directive, wasting masks for these dumb trends is simply disgusting and distasteful.
Shock, disgust and fury:
Since the trend of models wearing face masks as bikini became viral, people have lashed out their fury and disbelief at these models.
“’There is a global lack of masks. This is the worst joke I have seen during these horrible days,” said an infuriated commenter on these posts.
Commenting on Katja’s snap, an unimpressed man wrote — “The outfit was a waste to use four masks to one person.”
Another one added — “Unfortunately, due to the lack of aids, I find it currently inappropriate. Unless they were already used.”
Our take:
What is really wrong with them?
Have they gone bonkers?
Or are they so desperate for attention and cheap publicity that they are making fun of such a serious and miserable situation? Thousands have died and hundreds are on the verge of death because of the pandemic.

And rather than helping or using your influence in a positive way by calming the people or helping them sail through the crisis, these influencers are using essential medical supplies as ways to amuse themselves and their fans. Don’t they understand that there is an acute shortage of masks, so much so that even doctors and nurses who are treating COVID-19 patients are not able to procure them?
This is simply disgusting and distasteful. We hope this bizarre trend comes to an end.
