The NBA legend, Kobe Bryant in all sense was a man who was dedicated and driven to achieve the goals of his life. Besides his on-court accomplishments, it was his vision to achieve something beyond his NBA life that always made him stand apart. Don’t you think this legend truly deserves movie on his life – Kobe Bryant: Mamba The Movie?
The tragic death of Bryant in a helicopter crash on 26th January 2020 robs the fans of what the legendary basketball star could have possibly accomplished in a career outside the wooden court. Bryant envisioned a post-NBA career as a storyteller and a moviemaker. He wanted to be involved in movies, short films, television, novels, etc. and make his mark in the entertainment industry.
Post Career Plans
Bryant was quite clear in his thoughts as to where he wished to channelize his energy post hanging up his boots from the NBA in 2016. In an interview with Dana Jacobson of CBS News, Bryant said, “Nothing in this world happens without story.” He wanted to ‘impact lives through storytelling’.
“I think there’s a myriad of ways to reach an audience, and the important thing is making sure we have compelling stories and characters that can support that,” Bryant said in the interview.
Career In Entertainment Industry
In 2018, Bryant along with director Gotham Chopra made a documentary titled ‘Muse’ that talked about the challenges Bryant faced as a professional basketball player throughout his career. It reflects his life outside the sport and what all went into making him a top-notch athlete.
“Content to Kobe was a means to an end.” “He wanted to inspire and empower young people. That’s where he saw the kind of work he really wanted to do.” — Gotham Chopra
In 2013, Bryant launched a production company that evolved into Granity Studios. This is the same studio that produced the 2017 animated short film ‘Dear Basketball’ helping Bryant receive an Oscar for the movie. The short film was based on a hand-written poem by Bryant announcing his retirement from the game.
In one of the interviews, Bryant said that he wished to build his own animation studio where all the stuffs would be done to his standards rather than getting them outsourced. He also wanted to contribute to bringing diversity in entertainment industry and help broaden the horizons of the future generations.
“I want a diverse animation team,” Bryant said. “That is the opportunity. I want young African American children to understand that there is a serious industry that you can pursue. We can’t just talk about it. We’ve got to be about it.”
Bryant wished to do something different from the mainstream. His daughters were inclined to athletics and sports and hence he realized that stories of ‘prince and princess’ aren’t going to make a sense. He wanted to create stories that he could read to them.
Although Bryant appeared in many shows and movies, he was never really interested in being on the camera. He wanted to learn the nuances of a producer and director in the media. He was a ‘student of the process’ who questioned people to learn everything about the business.
Bryant’s Life On Screen
The genuine inclination of Bryant towards the entertainment industry was something that was quite an evident post his retirement from the game. He planned on a career very different from his sporting life and wanted to give something to society.
