Snapping a photo on the Mai Khao beach of Phuket could be sentenced to death
Mai Khao beach located on the island’s northwestern coast, which is popular amongst people who want photos with an aircraft landing overhead. Snapping runway has become a distraction for pilots.
Phuket International Airport is cracking down on visitors who flock to Mai Khao beach near the international airport and take photos with an aircraft landing overhead.
Airport chiefs have been left furious and promised to close off the section of the beach following concerns that it could cause an accident.
Phuket locals hit by saying if the beach was closed it would stop tourists coming to the island.
Authorities are developing a new safety zone near the runway meaning the tourists have no longer access to the area where they can take the pictures, according to Bangkok Post.
“We want both the income from tourism and aviation safety to co-exist. Anyone found guilty of distracting the pilots could be punished under the Air Navigation Act” said by Wichit Kaewsaithiam, director of Phuket International Airport.
The airport’s Deputy General Manager, Vijit Keawsaitiam, explained: “We are setting up a safety zone which will be categorised as a strictly prohibited area that does not allow people and tourists to take pictures. Aside from this area, local people and tourists can still come to take pictures as usual.”
Countless tourist over the years has captured while taking snaps of a plane flying across Mai Khao beach onto the Island’s runway.
