A company creates dairy-free Ice Cream using Maggots!
South African firm Gourmet Grubb made the horrid sounding creation by crushing up the hatchlings of dark fighter flies-alternatively known as maggots and blending it with flavors.
It doesn’t sound tempting, however, the sweet is as far as anyone knows stuffed brimming with protein, fat and minerals.

Based out of the Cape Town University of Technology, the company processes the larvae with other natural ingredients before mixing it with flavours in an ice cream machine.
They offer several flavours including chocolate, nutty spread and Christmas flavors, which are all very solid flavors structured, apparently, to enable you to overlook the reality you’re licking crushed maggots.

The head of product development at Gourmet Grubb, Leah Bessa said “Insects are typically environmentally friendly and sustainable to farm because they use very little land, water and food to grow on.”
“They aren’t at risk of climate change because you can grow them in a controlled environment, sort of an enclosed area. So you don’t have the effects of drought and all those other things that are associated with climate change”.

“And what’s really great is that they produce a lot of protein and fat and minerals, by growing on what would typically be considered a waste product.” She told The Sun.
In case you’re wondering what kind of aftertaste it has, we can’t reveal to you ourselves, yet the individuals who have made a trip for a free scoop have lauded it as being like other sans dairy frozen yogurts.
One patron said “it tastes preety good, it tastes like icecream should taste. A little bit more earthy, a bit more organic taste. But I’m preety happy”.
The company is planning to expand to the United States and the UK.
It might not be too long before you can try it yourself. We can’t wait…
