Looks like ‘Vikings’ took a leaf out of the “Games of Thrones” book in developing the show’s biggest cliff-hanger yet. Will it continue to resurrect Bjorn just like Jon Snow was brought back to life?
The final episode of ‘Vikings’ Season 6 Part 1 ended in this way: Bjorn, leader of the Vikings, is in battle with his own brother Ivar, who leads the Rus. In the middle of the fight, Ivar suddenly attacks Bjorn and stabs him, wounding him apparently fatally and leaving him to die. At this crucial cliff-hanger, the first part ends.

- ‘Vikings’ Season 6, Part 2: What’s in Store
This is quite reminiscent of the way a certain protagonist of a certain epic show also dies. Jon Snow in ‘Game of Thrones’ is tagged a traitor at the end of season 5 and is killed and left to die in a similar vein. However, in the next season, Jon Snow is resurrected.
In portraying Bjorn’s death, ‘Vikings’ seems to have been inspired by the way Jon Snow’s death is played out in ‘Game of Thrones’. Will the show also carry out the inspiration to its conclusion and bring Bjorn back to life in ‘Vikings’ Season 6 Part 2?
Bjorn vs Jon Snow
‘Vikings’ followed first the travels of Ragnar Lothrok, and then, later on, shifted its focus on to his sons Bjorn and Ivar, revolving around their journey. The show was conceived as a miniseries but was, later on, picked up for a second season (and then more) because of the popularity it seemed to accrue.
In many ways, Bjorn was the protagonist of the show, just as Jon Snow was in ‘Game of Thrones’. Although it wouldn’t be a new thing to kill off the main actor, it isn’t a fan-favourite move, and sometimes confuses the story arc.
In the case of Jon Snow, fans knew that it wasn’t possible to have him die on the show, and speculation revolved around how he would return. Snow’s death was the cliff-hanger, but the way he was resurrected formed the beginning of the next season. Perhaps something similar is brewing in ‘Vikings’ as well.
Is Bjorn Really Dead?
Was the scene of Bjorn’s death a dream sequence? Fans have been speculating on the fact that the way Bjorn is shown to die leaves a lot of room for debate.
The sudden way in which Ivar attacks him disturbs synchrony between the characters so that the attack could very well have been filmed to show that it’s happening in someone’s imagination. Maybe Bjorn himself was imagining how different scenarios could play out in the course of the battle, and his death at the hands of his brother could be one of them.
Scenes of the battle are interspersed with a conversation the brothers are having on a beach, in which each tells the other that he will be the one to win the battle. Ivar could be imagining how he would defeat Bjorn, and the stabbing scene might well be his imagination.
Besides, the makers of the show have teased about Bjorn’s return in ‘Vikings’ Season 6 Part 2. But they haven’t confirmed if this would be through flashbacks or dream sequences, or if he’d be brought back to life as part of the present narrative.
‘Vikings’ Season 6, Part 2: What’s in store?
Season 6 was divided into two parts containing 10 episodes each, and episode 10 from part 1 ends with Bjorn’s death. Apart from Bjorn, here is how we leave other characters at the end of episode 10. Another character assumed to be dead is Harald. While all this is happening, Ubbe and Torvi are on the lookout for Floki in Iceland. We don’t know what transpired with Floki.
Now episode 11 onwards, we’ll hope to find out if Bjorn will be part of the remaining season and in what way. But the burning question on every fan’s mind is: Who will take over the throne of Kattegat?
What’s more, season 6 is supposed to be the final season of the show, so there is a lot of excitement in knowing how the epic saga ends. Whatever happens, it’s sure to take place on a larger-than-life scale, so stay tuned! Don’t forget to share your views of the show with us in the comments box below.
