‘Kingdom’ has taken the Netflix audience by storm
Kingdom turned into an international sensation when Netflix first introduced the series in 2019. Written and created by Kim Eun-hee, this Korean zombie drama has become one of the most popular horror titles streaming on Netflix. The show runs on themes of supernatural apocalypses and political controversies, spun together by complex storytelling. The show has earned massive praise for its riveting plot, elaborate costumes and set design, impeccable cinematography, and intense gory details.
The plot of the show is your run-of-the-mill apocalyptic zombie situation, but with historical connotations. Set in the latter half of the 16th century, the show follows from the historical after-effects of the Japanese colonisation of Korea. The Japanese have left the country after a decade’s war, exposing it to famine and disease. A rebellion is rising against the crown and the king’s adviser Cho Hak-ju has made him into a zombie to prevent the subjects from learning about his death. Things take a terrible turn when the crown prince discovers the condition of his father.
‘Kingdom’ has the Netflix viewers eating out of its hands. One of the fans called the show “gold” on “Reddit”. He said, “One of the best new series on Netflix, and maybe even one of the best overall that went mostly in the shadows because is Korean, like seriously Netflix, give it more publicity is gold”.
After the release of the second season, fans are now eagerly waiting for Netflix to announce the third season. How long will the wait be?

Kim Eun-hee hints at wanting more seasons
Writer Kim Eun-hee has done a remarkable job with ‘Kingdom’. A fan reviewed, “The acting is top-notch, the cinematography and set design is near perfection, the story writing is well done and compelling … the writer was bold enough to take a refreshing take on zombies which I have never seen before and will probably be one of the most compelling elements of the show for most”.
Given the wide popularity of the show, fans have already taken more seasons of the show for granted. Kim Eun-hee gave wings to our dreams when she told “The Hollywood Reporter” that she wants the show to go on for as long as 10 seasons. She said, “Strangely enough, ‘Kingdom’ is a series that gives me more energy the more I write it. The cast and crew all have great chemistry, and there’s so much more to tell. If viewers allow, I would love to see it develop even up to season 10”. Eun-hee’s statement has put the fan’s minds to rest.
‘Kingdom’ Season 3 renewal update
Netflix has not confirmed a release date for season 3 of ‘Kingdom’ yet. Things were left off with a cliffhanger at the end of season 2, so we are hoping that is not the end for the show.
Director Park In-je, however, recommended more interesting “sageuks” like ‘Kingdom’ for the audience to fall back upon until an announcement about season 3 is made. He said, “Korean sageuks have a unique originality that is different from Japanese or Chinese period pieces. There’s a sageuk that is more accessible than others; it borrows the storyline from Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper” and is called ‘Masquerade’ (Gwanghae). Ryu Seung-ryong, who plays Cho Hak-ju in ‘Kingdom’, stars in this movie. It was a great success in Korea and tells an intriguing story. I highly recommend it”.
