It released 8 episodes this year in July to much fan applause and critical acclaim for the show’s dark and grave ambience, the talent shown by the lead, as well as supporting actors and a storyline that lived up to the 1st season’s.
In the ‘Angel of Darkness‘ Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), John Moore (Luke Evans), and series veteran Dr Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl) form a trio-squad to hunt down the most vicious serial killer 19th century New York has seen yet.
‘The Alienist’ and its sequel ‘Angel of Darkness’ enjoyed very high ratings and unprecedented commercial success, so it is only natural that TNT would be looking forward to continuing the fan loved series.

Most fans might be unaware of the fact that the show is actually based on the novel series by American author Caleb Carr. There are 3 novels in the series and the third instalment of the show will most likely be based upon the upcoming third novel.
What was ‘The Alienist’ about?
The show ‘The Alienist’ derives its name from the 19th-century profession under which doctors studied the behaviours and personalities of people who were deemed unfit for living in a society, owing to their bizarre and serious mental problems.
In the show, Dr Kreizler is a leading expert on these “deviant minds”, and is tasked with bringing to justice a serial killer in New York who’s gaining more and more notoriety each passing day, as he leaves behind him a streak of boy-prostitute murders. The show made its mark in mainstream media with its gruelling style of storytelling and its thoroughly immersive vision of life in the underside and upper side of New York in the Gilded era.
How did ‘Angel of Darkness’ end?
In the second season of the show ‘Angel of Darkness’, Sara Howard who was a side character in the first season, chooses to start her own private detective agency alongside Dr Kreizler from season 1 and John Moore (an illustrator for New York Times). The trio is put in charge of hunting down and bringing to justice the most elusive and deadly serial killer ever in the history of New York law enforcement.
Each episode takes us to the not so glamorous underbelly of the glamorous state of New York filled with petty crimes, murder, theft, deceit, corruption of both moral and material kind, and things much darker than those.
One of the other major themes of the season is the changing roles of modern women and their growing presence and importance in a workspace (such as law enforcement) that have been historically dominated by men; all of which is seen through the eyes of the show lead Sara Howard.
What can fans expect from the third season?
The third season has not been confirmed yet by either TNT or any of the people working on the show.
However, there’s much hope for the next season due to the fact that the series remains unfinished until all the novels from the novel series are covered and, as of yet, ‘Angel of Darkness’ was only the second part of the three-part novel series. The third novel is currently under works by author Caleb Carr.
What will be the cast of season 3?
We can expect the series regulars Daniel Bruhl (as Dr Kreizler), Dakota Fanning (as Sara Howard) and Luke Evans (as John Moore), Rosy McEwen, and Melanie Field to return to the show along with some new cast additions as well.
