Fans believe the science fiction drama series ended way too soon. With 2020 being the year of surprises and uncertainties, Netflix’s ‘Sense8’ might still have a fair chance to resurrect with season 3.
Debuted in 2015, the web television series has been critically acclaimed for its theme and storyline. With Aml Ameen, Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, and Brian J. Smith in the lead among many others, the show portrays eight strangers from different parts of the world who, in a trice, discovered that they are “sensates”. An unforeseen cancellation in 2017 caused a lot of despondency among fans, which eventually led to loud tweets expressing how disappointed they were upon hearing the news. However, Netflix made it up to the super fans by releasing a long-overdue series finale that certainly ended on a high note.

Fans believe ‘Sense8’ has the best representation on TV
With the Wachowski sisters being the transwomen duo showrunners, the series is packed with a top-notch diverse cast and characters that make the show the best among its kind. Having a gay couple or two on shows and movies have become the regular “trend”, and ‘Sense8’ is no different. Besides the post-wedding-season-finale orgy, what fascinated fans the most was the possibility of the trio Rajan, Kala, and Wolfgang ending up together. Boy, do we want Sense8 season 3 so desperately!
The finale fans wished didn’t happen so soon
The series finale didn’t quite end the way fans thought it should’ve. To begin with, fans didn’t want the show to end in the first place. The disappointment yet strong support of the superfans is what encouraged the showrunners to give the audience a finale they deserved. A year later, since the release of the eleventh episode, the ‘Sense8’ team did the impossible and released a two-hour long episode that left the audience feeling happy as larry.
Before the surprise finale came to its existence, the series intended to end with (almost) everyone at war. Whether it was Joong-ki killing his father and framing his sister for the murder or the BPO physically and mentally torturing Wolfgang through those deadly electric shocks to the chest, the pain always resonated through the cluster.
Of course, it wasn’t all that bad. I mean, Kala and Wolfgang finally confessed their love for each other, Will and Riley are totally into each other, and Amanita and Noni finally get engaged. Moving on to the “finale” finale, the cluster and their allies discover that Angelica faked her relationship with Whispers to locate Raoul. Sigh!
Meanwhile, Hoy connects Riley with River- the leader of a pro-sensate group inside BPO. An unexpected revelation is made when Bodhi connects the eight with the Mother of the Lacuna, an ancient group of sensates, who reveals she “birthed” Whispers, and his ambition to attain immortality through the drones. Whispers becomes a target to kill and is taken to Naples where Lila is about to facilitate the exchange with The Chairman.
To save the world from its destruction, Jonas uses Angelica’s secret prototype to make a drone that will assassinate The Chairman but instead blows himself up and the research facility. Consequently, Will kills Lila and Whispers. The end? Not yet.
Finally, the much-awaited wedding happens in the most romantic. way. everrr. Nomi’s and Amanita’s wedding was officiated by River at the Eiffel tower. If that isn’t the best venue to get married, then we don’t know what is. But wait, that’s not all. The post-wedding orgy was certainly the highlight of the series. Additionally, there is a big chance that Kala, Rajan, and Wolfgang may develop a polyamorous relationship. But, of course, that can only happen only if there is a third season in the making. So, what’s the update on that?
The possibility of a new season revealed
Back in 2018, a ‘Sense8’ mega fan created a petition that strongly suggests why the show deserves to revive and how Netflix made a huge mistake cancelling the series. In their argument, the fans convey,
“Netflix’s argument that ‘Sense8’ does not have a sizable audience has been proven false time and time again but most recently by the successful crowdfunding of the world’s first ‘Sense8’ mural in San Francisco. ‘Sense8’ fans around the world reached the goal before the deadline and the mural is the only fan-funded work of public art for a Netflix Original Series.”
The petition has managed to get 91,579 signatures and counting. Fans are, without a doubt, glad that the Wachowski believed the show deserved a better ending if not three more seasons as initially planned. As reported by “The Hollywood Reporter”, negotiating a budget with Netflix and bringing back the cast on schedule was strenuous but worth it.
“When we were doing season one and two, we had all of the principal cast there all of the time; you have the ability to move scenes and the cast around. On this, everybody had other commitments. But once we had a schedule, we kept it. We got everybody there who was supposed to be there — sometimes just a little too close for comfort — but it all worked out”
Expressed executive producer Grant Hill.
Besides the petition, fans have also shared their personal opinions on social media platforms like Twitter to express how badly they feel about ‘Sense8 ending’.
“You know what keeps me up late at night? Knowing ‘Sense 8’ was cancelled. I’ll never forgive u @netflix”, said a fan tweet.
Another fan tweet read, “I’ll never understand why ‘Sense 8’ on Netflix was cancelled … beautiful concept, acting was on point, inclusive on every front, gorgeous set locations. #sense8 #netflix #loveislove”.
Honestly, we all know that Netflix cancels shows before subscribers can catch a breath. So if ‘Sense8’ were to come back, it would either be after a lot of convincing. Like, A LOT OF IT. If Netflix still decides not to greenlight the show, there are other OTT platforms and networks waiting to take on the responsibility of giving what its fans deserve (CBS, Hulu, Peacock, PopTV are you listening?).
