About ‘Orange Is The New Black’: A revolution TV needed
‘Orange Is The New Black’ is based on the novel that details Piper’s excruciating experience as a federal woman prisoner.
Piper Kerman was sentenced to a federal jail on charges of money-laundering for nearly thirteen months.
Netflix’s version of Piper’s memoir wasn’t just focussed on the main character. It told the painful tales of different women inside the prison. These women were all from different races, socio-economic class, and ethnicity. Each woman carried a unique story that was as important as Piper’s story.
Through the series, we got a deeper insight into America’s polarized policies on immigration. We could feel the atrocities conducted inside the prison and its impact on the mental health of the prisoners among an array of other topics.
The Netflix drama OITNB brought many laurels to the platform since its debut. The series swept 4 Emmy Awards and were nominated in various categories. They also have several Golden Globe nominations to their share. Taylor Schilling won the Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a television series (Drama).
The American Film Institute, in 2013, recognised the series as one of the Top 10 TV Programs of the Year. ‘Orange Is The New Black’ became the first show to get Emmy nomination in both comedy and drama categories.
‘Orange Is The New Black’: The story!
Piper Chapman is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s prison called Litchfield prison for a crime committed 10 years earlier. After landing in the prison, she grapples with the racial differences and bizarre prison politics.
One day, she offends the powerful matriarch of the prison kitchen named Red. She retaliates by serving Piper a bloody sanitary napkin and subsequently starving her. With this incident, Piper starts her gruesome journey in the prison. Surprisingly, a few days later Piper is surprised to find out that Alex Vause, her ex-girlfriend, is held in the same prison. Alex was the one who recruited her into smuggling drug money.
Larry’s editor publishes his article about Piper in the New York Times, which ultimately turns her into a person of interest in the prison.
In one unfortunate night, Piper is forced into a plane with no whereabouts. After she lands, she discovers that she is in Chicago to testify in the trial of Alex’s drug boss Kubra Balik. Her testimony leads to an extended jail term for Alex.
Later, we get to know that Red is growing plants in an old greenhouse as a cover to move contraband of drugs into the prison. But an accident leads to Red in the hospital in the fourth-to-last episode of ‘Orange Is The New Black’, where her cognitive impairment is properly diagnosed. Later she is shifted to Florida where she will spend the remaining 10 years of her jail term.
In season 6 episode 13, the fans of the show witnessed the long-awaited in-prison marriage of Piper and Alex officiated by Nicky Nichols. Thereafter, Piper’s sentence is reduced, from 15 months to 13 and so she is released from the jail. Piper feels empty leaving Alex behind. Later in the episode, Alex is shifted to a prison in Ohio. Piper also shifts in the same area to be close to Alex and to start a new life.
Will ‘Orange Is The New Black’ season 8 become reality?
‘Orange Is The New Black’ aired its final episode on July 27, 2018. After this, there has been no news on a follow-up season. The show has been Netflix’s most-watched and highly acclaimed series. In spite of this, makers haven’t thought about producing the eighth season of OITNB.
However, if ‘Orange Is The New Black’ reboots with season 8, fans could get to see Alex’s story as a freed inmate and her love story with Piper, taking a new leap. The show might also focus on Piper’s fight to instil criminal justice reforms in the country and equal rights to immigrants.
We can expect the same main characters. Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, Laura Prepon as Alex Vause, Yael Stone as Lorna Morello, and Samira Wiley as Poussey Washington may return in ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 8.
