‘Homeland’ is an American spy thriller adaptation of the incredibly popular Israeli series titled ‘Prisoners of War’. It went on to get several Emmy nominations and took home many accolades at the Golden Globes, Satellite Awards, and the Emmys as well. The show is a phenomenon for its ability to keep viewers hooked and its master storytelling, but also for its characters. Peter Quinn is one of them, and even though he met his end in season 6, he is one of ‘Homeland’s’ most memorable characters.
Actor Rupert Friend’s exceptional portrayal of Quinn’s influential ways has been commended by viewers and earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for the same. Keep reading to learn more about his character on ‘Homeland’ and what happened to him in season 6.
Was Peter Quinn killed in ‘Homeland’?
Peter Quinn was a CIA paramilitary officer who was assigned to assassinate Congressman Nicholas Brody in season 2. He joins ‘Homeland’ as a leader of a surveillance team consisting of Carrie, Saul, Virgil, and Max who observe Brody after his attempts to assassinate the vice-president are uncovered.
Although he is unable to kill Brody, Quinn becomes a major character in seasons 4 and 5 to Carrie’s story and the plot. Viewers of the show wanted to see Peter and Carrie get together, but their romance was doomed.
Quinn had gone through a gamut of abuse, from torture to his struggle with alcoholism, being shot and surviving bombs. He even survived a brain haemorrhage caused by his efforts to battle ISIS terrorists, who turned their chemical weapons on him. The character had gone through a great ordeal and the writers worked towards giving him the end he deserved.
His death was heart-wrenching for fans
From a guest character on the series, Quinn made his way to the lead and died a heroic death in season 6. Originally meant to be written off during season 5 due to sarin gas poisoning, Quinn recovers in season 6 but meets his end anyway. You see the character in season 6, his last, suffering from seizures and PTSD and yet, committed to saving everyone else. Quinn and Carrie work together to rescue President-elect Keane from an assassination plot, but that becomes their last mission together. Quinn is heart-breakingly killed by several bullets while driving their getaway vehicle.
As every major character’s death, from Daenerys Targaryen to Walter White has sparked outrage, Quinn’s did too. Fans couldn’t understand why the showrunners would kill Quinn after making him suffer the way he had. A large community of fans hoped to see Carrie and Quinn get together and were disappointed that he was unfairly killed.
If you think about it though, Quinn would have died eventually because he had suffered too much and would continue to sacrifice himself. Recruited by the CIA at the age of 16, it was his way of life and he had undergone a great deal of pain and the showrunners didn’t want Quinn to overstay his welcome.
Updates for ‘Homeland’ Season 9
The ‘Homeland’ finale aired in April this year, but the showrunners are also teasing the possibility of the show’s return. The anticipated finale was left open-ended, which means that it could return if the writers decided they wanted it to! In a report posted by “The Sun”, Co-creator Alex Gasa gave fans some hope for a new season in the future.
“As [co-creator Howard Gordon] has said, ‘never say never’. All of us are happy with where we ended the show and the series. Another chapter doesn’t feel necessary at the moment”,
He said before changing tunes and suggesting a new season could be in the words.
“But who knows what’s going to happen? Who knows what Claire and Mandy want to do? Who knows what Howard wants to do? We don’t know what that looks like. For now, it feels like closure”,
The finale revealed that Carrie was living in Russia and that she had penned a book slamming the CIA.
