TV Choice Awards 2020: Who ate the cake?
Keeping the social distancing protocols in mind, TV Choice Awards 2020 took to the internet and the radio to announce their verdict on the best television shows. One of the most prestigious awards in the television industry, TV Choice Awards 2020 announced its results on September 7 through a live broadcast on “Greatest Hits Radio” and published the same on their website. The results have disappointed some of the fans after they realised that two popular shows, ‘Normal People’ and ‘Gentleman Jack’, were crossed out of the winner’s list in more than one category.
While some of the winners deserved a seat at the table, a few came as a surprise as well. Among the winners, actor Martin Clunes won the “Best Actor” award for the family drama ‘Doc Martin’. Jodie Comer once again took away the title of the ‘Best Actress’ for her unparalleled portrayal of the cold-blooded assassin Villanelle in ‘Killing Eve’. The ITV show, ‘This Morning’ was chosen as the “Best Daytime Show”, while ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’ was stamped as the “Best Reality Show” for the fourteenth time! The viewers witnessed a celebrity chef and his comrades make the winning mark for the “Best Food Show” as their show, ‘Gordon, Gino, & Fred: American Trip’ made the cut.
In a first, the baking shows of Love Productions have swept off its competitions and taken the title of “Best Talent Show”.
‘Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad’ has won the title of “Best Factual Show”. ‘After Life’ has been chosen as the “Best Comedy Show”, and ‘White House Farm’ won the “Best New Drama” category. The “Best Family Drama” award was presented to ‘Call the Midwife’, while the “Best Drama Series” award went to none other than ‘Peaky Blinders’. As for the “Best Entertainment Show”, the title went to ‘Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’. Jack P Shepherd and Shelley King won the ‘Best Soap Actor’ and the ‘Best Soap Actress’ respectively. In a hat trick, ‘Coronation Street’ won the ‘Best Soap’ award.
‘Gentleman Jack’ and ‘Normal People’ lost the combat
BBC’s ‘Gentleman Jack’ and ‘Normal People’, which were both in the run for the TV Choice Awards in multiple categories, met a disappointing defeat in every one of them.
‘Normal People’, a series adapted from Sally Rooney’s novel that goes by the same name, had its lead man, Paul Mescal, and his on-screen romantic interest Daisy Edgar-Jones nominated for the Best Actor and Actress category. Both the actors lost their respective awards to ‘Doc Martin’s’ Martin Clunes and Jodie Comer of ‘Killing Eve’.
If that defeat wasn’t enough, ‘Gentleman Jack’ and ‘Normal People’ both lost in the ‘Best New Drama’ category. The two shows were nominated for ‘Best New Drama’ along with ‘Gangs of London’ and ‘White House Farm’. ‘White House Farm’ won the category leaving the other three shows out of the winner cards, which was, to be honest, a surprise for most of us.
Fans are upset over the verdict
Although the results agree with most of the viewers, fans of ‘Normal People’ and ‘Gentleman Jack’ are not happy with it. They have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment with the results of 2020 TV Choice Awards. A fan said,
‘Normal People’ follows two teenagers from different social status finding love and romance in each other.
On the other hand, people are also disappointed at the defeat of ‘Gentleman Jack’, a period drama that explores love and sexuality at a time when homosexuality was socially condemned. A fan wrote on “Twitter”, “It’s a real shame that Gentleman Jack hasn’t won Best New Drama (I mean really?!) but congratulations to Jodie Comer and Peaky Blinders”.
‘Gentleman Jack’ and ‘Normal People’ losing out have come as a surprise given the impeccable performance and content of the two shows. Did any of the 2020 TV Choice Awards surprise you? Let us know in the comments below!
