Why would an award-winning Ruth leave ‘The Affair’?
“The Hollywood Reporter” and other big media houses chased Ruth to know why she took this step. She sometimes said pay parity was the reason. But there was a bigger reason behind this big step.
Some of the people involved in the drama, ‘The Affair’, said that Wilson had long wanted to leave the show because of ongoing frustrations with the nudity required from her. Moreover, she had problems with Treem over the direction of her character, and decided to resign from the “hostile work environment”.
Whispers hinted at hostile work environment
Ruth Wilson knew before signing on to an adult drama at Showtime called ‘The Affair‘ that it would likely involve some disrobing. Her issue was with the frequency of these nude scenes. Some sources of THR said she was asked to be nude where there seemed to be no clear creative rationale for the nudity. Those scenes were only “titillating“, according to one of the people involved with the production. Another person told THR that Wilson asked the director by referring to her male co-star,
“Why do you need to see me and not more of him?”
Though she had signed a nudity waiver when she auditioned for the pilot, the performers must still have the right to “provide meaningful consent and be treated with respect and dignity during production“. Against her repetitive concerns over the scenes, she received a push-back and was branded as a “difficult” actress.
One of the insiders mentioned that Treem, in particular, pressured Ruth to perform such scenes. The environment was toxic because there was tone-deafness from the director, who behaved like a man from 1950s.
What the director said about the accusations
However, Treem denied all the accusations of pressurising performers.
“I would never say those things to an actor. That’s not who I am. I am not a manipulative person, and I’ve always been a feminist.”
“I have devoted my entire professional life to writing about and speaking to women’s issues, women’s causes, women’s empowerment, and creating strong, complex roles for women in theatre and in Hollywood … the idea that I would ever cultivate an unsafe environment or harass a woman on one of my shows is utterly ridiculous and lacks a grounding in reality.”
The body double incident makes it clear
One can easily guess the truth by going through this one instance in the second season. Wilson was replaced by a body double because she declined to shoot an aggressive sex scene. It appeared like a rape sequence though Treem says that it was written to be a consensual sex scene. Later, the same body double sued Showtime in 2017, on the grounds of being fired after a confrontation with a male assistant director. According to her, he described her on a call sheet as “Alison Sexytime Double“.
Even though Treem keeps denying all the accusations against her while filming ‘The Affair’, multiple incidents on the show make us believe something was fishy. There’s no smoke without fire. The only person who knows the truth about why Ruth Wilson left the series is the actress herself. She has neither denied nor accepted what all is written about these incidents.
