‘Dexter’: Everyone’s favourite serial killer!
Set in Miami, ‘Dexter’ tells the story of Dexter Morgan, a forensic scientist working with the city’s police. At 3 years old, Dexter sees his mom get brutally killed. This tragic event has a major impact on him and eventually, he starts leading a double life working with the law enforcement as well as a vigilante who kills crooks who are able to get away from the justice system. Dexter is demonstrated to be very attentive and extremely alert, using his insight for crime scene investigation. What makes the series exceptional is its portrayal of the emotional and psychological state of Dexter and the development of his character with time.

Michael C. Hall’s depiction of Dexter was so remarkable that it won him a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Satellite Award, and even a Saturn Award. The hit TV program also spawned a web series named ‘Dexter: Early Cuts’ in 2009. Marvel Comics delivered a limited edition Dexter comic book in 2013, written by creator Jeff Lindsay and drawn by Dalihbor Talajic.
Following a long gap, fans, at last, got incredible news in October 2020 when Showtime declared that it was bringing Dexter back as a 10-episode long mini-series.
A ratings mammoth for Showtime!
Created by James Manos Jr., ‘Dexter’ turned into a ratings beast right from the get-go. The show gave showtime probably some of the best ratings it had ever gotten. Season 8 of ‘Dexter’ debuted to a viewership of 3 million watchers, and drew 2.8 million viewers during the finale scene, the greatest viewership ever for Showtime. The animated web series too churned out 3 highly successful seasons.
In spite of having set off some copycat killings due to its mass effect, the show effectively remained Showtime’s golden child throughout its run.
The revival: Release date and other details
On October 14, 2020, it was reported that Showtime had requested a 10-episode long renewal in a limited series format. Clyde Phillips will be the showrunner and the mini-series will premiere in the fall of 2021. The shooting will commence in February. The last season saw Dexter faking his passing and living under another name in Oregon after he destroyed his boat and got away with the body of his sister, who had been shot. It is yet to be declared whether the upcoming show will be a continuation of season 8. Actors Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, Jack Alcott, and Michael Cyril Creighton will be joining Hall in important roles.
Michael C. Hall, in a recent interview, expressed how he too feels that the original ending was not right and that the reboot could fix that saying,
“I think, in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before. And let’s be real: people found the way that shows left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling”.
