We can see only one avenue for the show’s revival since Netflix cancelled it.
It seems to be a long, hard winter this year. More favourite shows are being cancelled than revived, and there seems to be no respite from this cancellation spree! It hits harder when the show is actually good. ‘The OA’, a cult sci-fi supernatural drama by Netflix, was recently axed by the streaming giant in a move that fans called controversial and really, really unfair.
- ‘The OA’ was planned for a full five seasons
- What led to its cancellation?
- The only way that can ensure ‘The OA’s revival
The show premiered with its first season in December 2016. It then took excruciatingly long to return with its second season in 2019, before dropping the bomb that it was going to get cancelled altogether. When news of its cancellation reached fans, full-fledged campaigns were taken on to bring back the show, including online campaigns with the hashtag #SaveTheOA. But nothing seems to have worked yet, the series remains cancelled. However, we may have figured out one way to reboot ‘The OA’.
‘The OA’ was planned for a full five seasons
Starring Brit Marling and Jason Isaacs, ‘The OA’ is about Prairie Johnson, who was once blind but suddenly returns from her place of captivity after several years with her vision intact. She then sets off on a chase to hunt down former captor Hap, helped along the journey by fellow survivors.
The show was initially sketched out for a full five seasons, as Isaacs revealed in an interview. The entire storyline was mapped out in the heads of the creators and writers. With the cancellation of the show, many threads are bound to hang loose.
What led to its cancellation?
We can’t be sure about what exactly led to the show’s cancellation. We’re guessing Netflix was just being Netflix, taking a tough call on shows it didn’t think would do well ratings-wise. Due to many factors needing consideration, what with the pandemic and production-related issues brought about by it, networks and streaming platforms are more wary than they used to be.
‘The OA’ comes behind a string of other cancellations including ‘Tuca & Bertie’, ‘The Rain’, and ‘Dark’. However, when it comes to ‘The OA’ revival, we believe there’s still one way out.
The only way that can ensure ‘The OA’s’ revival
Since the wrapping up of the brilliant story couldn’t happen in just two seasons, more would be needed to make sense of the entire plot.
As Netflix seems to be resolute about cancelling the show, more seasons are unlikely to happen unless Netflix changes its mind, which is even unlikelier. So, the only way out for ‘The OA’ revival, we believe, is to produce a movie franchise of the show.
As this article suggests, creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij did toy with the idea of answering the show’s long list of questions for the characters in the format of a movie. But they dismissed it, citing a 2-hour long movie would not suffice to contain the entire story. This is where the movie franchise idea seems to make the most sense.
In fact, it rather seems to be the only avenue left for fans. Don’t you think?
