Bonnie and Damon were never together romantically, yet a lot of fans of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ wished they were. Why did this pair never date? Let’s find out.
Throughout the eight seasons of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, there were a lot of odd-couples and cringe-worthy love triangles, but something that never happened, and we are grateful for, is the Damon and Bonnie being in a relationship. Damon and Bonnie developed a strong friendship over time, one that only got stronger with the killing off one bad guy to another and, of course, protecting their one common goal-Elena Gilbert.

So, why did this beautiful friendship never develop into a romantic one?
Damon and Bonnie: The love-hate relationship
Before the pair were anything at all, Bonnie loathed Damon and his evil ways. But the two had to then come together on multiple occasions to save each other, fight off the bad guys, protect Mystic Falls, and save Elena, over and over again. The vampire and witch duo were a force to be reckoned with, which Bonnie had to agree and use to her advantage, even if she hated Damon as a person/vampire. It also helped that Damon was changing with Elena’s influence over him and, Bonnie could not ignore that. The duo, on multiple occasions, did have a hard time getting along, especially with Damon purposefully getting on Bonnie’s nerves. However, there was still a mutual understanding to “save the world”.
But to become more than just a mutually-agreed pair of supernatural beings fighting off the greater evil, you need to not despise each other, which was quite often the case with these two. But, what else was going on between them?

Damon and Bonnie: The true best friends
The partner-in-crime, at some point in their adventures, became friends. It was a gradual and slow process, but it was inevitable. Bonnie realised that in the world of supernatural, the line between good and evil is too blurry, if not non-existent. The realisation brought Bonnie and Damon a lot closer.
Also, when Damon sacrifices himself to save Stefan, and the delay he causes in reaching Bonnie as he is trying to save Caroline’s mother proves that he had started to become a better person.
The bond becomes stronger when Bonnie sacrifices herself to save Damon from the prison world, but Damon comes back to save her.
And after an experience like that, their bond became air-tight, and a friendship was born. Even if they didn’t like to admit it, they were each other’s best friends. To not show the pair involved in a romantic relationship was to give this friendship the honesty and love it deserved. They didn’t need to be anything more to prove their love and loyalty for each other. But there was, of course, another significant reason.
Elena and Damon: Endgame
Out of all the awkward love-triangles and couples that don’t look good together, Damon and Elena were endgames from the time they kissed. While dating each other and complicating established relationships was a favourite of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, this pair was not to be touched.
With Stefan-Elena-Damon already in a love triangle, there was no need to complicate things further, that too with Elena’s best friend Bonnie. Besides, Damon needed a friend and, Bonnie was that for him.
Why ruin a beautiful friendship with a romantic relationship when it would be doomed from the start?
