Some shows are gone but never forgotten, and that is precisely the category under which ‘The Vampire Diaries’ sits at the top. The show which ended in 2017 has the fans still talking about it, owing to the two-spin offs and its stark presence in pop-culture.
Out of the many things about the show that made it immortal (pun intended) Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), the good guy who likes to be bad, certainly is one of them. The vampire in all eight seasons of the show takes us on a journey of hell, love and forgiveness, and you might think you know him, but do we really know everything there is to know about the elder Salvatore brother?
Here are some of the lesser-known facts about The Vampire Diaries’ Damon Salvatore.
1) Damon and Elena Weren’t Supposed To Get Together
To start the list of things we didn’t know about Damon, to imagine Damon and Elena not together certainly is shocking. According to show-runner Julie Plec, the fans started insisting on Damon and Elena to be together in season 2.
But Katherine’s reappearance, the introduction of the Original vampires Klaus and Elijah, Caroline becoming a vampire, Tyler a werewolf, and Elena finding out that she was a doppelganger of a woman who had destroyed Stefan’s life were all welcome distractions to keep the pair far apart. But, nature found its course, and we are not complaining.
2) Damon’s Character Was Popular For Audition, Hard To Get
To get the role of a character who has ‘iconic’ plastered all over it is next to impossible, but still, people try. Before Somerhalder got the part, other characters who ended up on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ also auditioned for it.

Actor Michael Trevino who ended up playing Tyler Lockwood, Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan), Nathanial Buzolic (Kol Mikaelson) all had their hope set for the part.
3) Killing Jeremy Gilbert Was Supposed To Make The Audience Hate Damon
We know that getting the audience to hate Damon is the toughest task of all, but killing the apple of Elena’s eye, her brother, Jeremy Gilbert was supposed to do the trick. Damon started as the bad guy, but a few good deeds on the way like saving his brother on multiple occasions, his genuine friendship with Elena, and protecting Mystic Falls left no choice for the fans but to love him unconditionally.

The vampire snaps Jeremy’s neck in season 2 (Jeremy survives) and makes Elena hate him, at least for a little while. But even this unjustifiable act does not make the fans hate him.
4) Damon Loves Having His Humanity Again
It might seem like the elder Salvatore brother is all for the blood lust and supernatural perks that come along with being a vampire, but Damon enjoyed having his humanity back. There are not many details available about Damon and Elena’s life together, except in the finale, Elena says Damon and she had a nice long life together.
Damon and Elena get married, Elena becomes a doctor, and they have a daughter named Stefanie (confirmed in ‘Legacies’). According to Somerhalder, Damon would like the fresh air and not having to worry about not being killed.
5) Damon Won’t Appear On ‘Legacies’
Sorry, people! Ian Somerhalder has pretty much confirmed that he won’t be appearing on the ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spin-off show ‘Legacies’. Although, given his directing background, the actor might appear on the sets of the show as a director.
In ‘The Vampire Diaries’ days, Somerhalder directed three episodes of the show- “The Downward Spiral” (season 6, episode 16), “Days of Future Past” (season 7, episode 16), and “We Have History Together” (season 8, episode 8). So, it isn’t an unfathomable thought to have, it is rather an exciting one.
6) Damon’s Final Line Wasn’t As Iconic Before
Who doesn’t remember Damon suddenly appearing on the balcony of Stefan’s room and saying two little magic words that made us fall in love with him?
“Hello, brother” were also the last words Damon spoke, and that too to Stefan when they meet each other in the afterlife. But the original dialogue was “Oh, I see they have hero hair in heaven”. It might be more suited to Damon’s sarcasm traits but the nostalgia of those two little words is what we can’t get over.
