The charm of women in prison: A new age saga
The loud, dirty, and unapologetic women of the show are what captured the world’s attention when the show premiered. It first arrived on the scene in 2013 and is based around women serving time in prison, and the necessary means they have to succumb in order to survive.
The show opens up with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) the lead protagonist finding herself sentenced to jail time. Her name is brought up in a criminal trial and she is ultimately convicted of international drug smuggling and has to spend 14 months in jail.

During its seven seasons, ‘Orange Is the New Black’ depicts the life of inmates inside the prison and also uses flashbacks to show their lives before prison. So, who was behind the massive success of the show?

Besides Schilling, the series also stars Uzo Aduba, the breakout star from the show who won a Primetime Emmy for her outstanding performance. Alongside Schilling and Aduba, the show stars Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, Kate Mulgrew, and Taryn Manning.
One of the most critically and commercially successful roles was of Ruby Rose who played the ultra-cool and equally badass Stella and later went on to bag the role of Batwoman for DC Comics in the show ‘Batwoman’. And just like her role in the comedy-drama series, fans regardless of gender, age, and sexuality fell in love with Rose’s portrayal of the lesbian superhero.
And at the heart of the show, these women bring out diverse and female-led stories and illustrate that women-centric stories are compelling enough to draw audiences from all over the world. With everything going for them, can the show be coming back for a season 8?
