Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is unmistakably one of the most popular period comedies out there. This fiercely bold show is abundant with tongue-in-cheek humour and content so fresh that nobody expected it. Brought to us by the Palladino duo, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the story of Midge Maisel, a young, aspiring stand-up comedian, struggling to make it in a man’s world. Moving along, the Palladinos had plans to rewrite history in season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Read on to find out how.
The Lenny-Midge chemistry is scalding hot
It would be lying if one were to say that they never felt the heart-racing chemistry that transpired between Midge Maisel and Lenny Bruce. For a little context, Lenny Bruce was a famous American stand-up comedian of the 1940s. Known for his freestyle comedy, he attacked the formal norms of the society, religion, gender, and politics of the times. Almost every other night, Lenny was arrested on the grounds of obscenity and vulgarity projected through his content.
Lenny Bruce has been an on-and-off presence on the show, but every time he shares the screen with Mrs. Maisel, there are a million butterflies in our stomachs. It all started when Midge bailed Bruce out of jail for the first time and asked him if he loved comedy. Lenny answers with his naughty smirk that melted our hearts, “It’s a terrible, terrible job. It should not exist. Like cancer. And God.” From there started an amazing journey for Midge, and Lenny stuck by her through thick and thin. On multiple occasions, the two rushed to rescue each other, and what came across was a beautiful friendship with some teasing, some flirting and a lot of spark.
Episode 5 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 3 made fans go crazy as we experience what Lenny and Midge might feel like as a couple. As they hop around Miami, in what feels like a fun and impromptu date, the chemistry between Lenny and Midge is sexually charged and romantic, with sparks flying all around them.

Why did the Palladinos change direction?
The episode titled, “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” in season 3 had finally given signs of a romantic angle between Lenny and Midge. Such an event would have redefined the history of American stand-up comedy. The creators teased the audience but did not intend to cross the lines with Lenny and Midge. Amy Sherman-Palladino had said to Vanity Fair, “Every time you get them together, they just had a camaraderie and a chemistry…The fact that she was there for him last year when he was feeling low and in the season finale, and she shows up for him…I think that, that a lot of time it translates into, ‘Well, eventually they’re going to have sex.’ Right? But it’s not necessarily the way it’s going to go.”
Amy Sherman-Palladino also said as The Washington Post notes, “I want [Midge] to have that validation from someone who is the best of the best. It was also very important that this man, who, in reality, was the one pushing comedy into the next phase … looked at her like an equal, like a comrade, like a pal, like a drinking buddy.”

What does the Future Hold?
Following season 3 of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, fans have been hopelessly wondering if Midge and Lenny would get back together. The Palladinos have said otherwise. They plan to keep the Lenny-Midge relationship platonic. As confirmed by Sherman-Palladino, they wanted Lenny to be nothing more than “a muse in a sense … somebody who is approaching comedy the way Midge was going to start approaching comedy.”
If we follow history, the show has already entered the 1960s and it is almost close to the final arrest of Lenny, after which he was banned as a comedy artist from the clubs. Judging from Lenny Bruce’s death due to drug overdose in 1966, there is not much screen time left for Lenny in the show.
Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is on its way and we are already counting days. Where do you think season 4 will take Midge? Let us know in the comments!
