Slashed by Netflix shortly after season 2 from its streaming platform; The OA fans still await Season 3.
The American thriller mystery series The OA marked its debut on Netflix in 2016. Subsequently, Season 2 of The OA slid into the streaming platform in 2019. In the course of three years spawning two seasons, The OA had carved its own audiences and a mass fan-base. The hype that the supernatural series The OA had proved is baffling. To date, the fans await for The OA Season 3.
- Into the mind-bending series
- The OA initially planned for five seasons
- The real reason behind The OA’s cancellation
The show OA was supposed to stretch over five seasons but was abruptly shut off after Season 2. Brit Marling, the protagonist that plays the missing blind woman in the series took to her Instagram account to convey the message to her fans.
“Some of you may know already or some of you may be learning from this letter that Netflix will not be continuing The OA.”
Marling added, “It’s been an intense journey for everyone who worked on and cared about this story.”
Infuriated by the news, the fans kick-started an online petition to bring The OA back on Netflix. Anybody who has watched the show has only one question, that is, why the show was cancelled abruptly despite receiving positive feedback by the majority of critics.
The show was cancelled by Netflix on August 5, 2019, but that couldn’t stop the fans for asking for more.
Rafael Ivan (a fan) kick-started an online petition on org.change requesting Netflix to revive The OA for at least Season 3. The campaign is called #RenewTheOA campaign and the petition so far has managed to get a massive 92,070 signatures with 150,000 still to go.
A series initially planned for Five Seasons
Netflix’s original series The OA spanned across two seasons giving us a total of 16 episodes. The show was well-received by the audiences with even strict critics-rating website Rotten Tomatoes giving both its seasons an 80+ rating, respectively.
With countless fan theories and 60K+ subscribers on subreddit, The OA was able to pull off a large fan-base for itself; with what some might call a ‘cult’ following online.
Real reason why The OA was cancelled by Netflix
The series which was initially planned to run for five seasons on Netflix was cancelled following a high cost of production. The rough decision lead to the executives of the show to pull the plug on this mind-bending mystery thriller. The OA was Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s joint sci-fi collaboration evolving as one of the most brilliant shows today.
However, another reason that points to the show’s doom is that the narrative went super metaphysical and complex; best understood only by a limited fan-base. Rather than trying to expand and make the show more accessible to a greater audience, Marling and Batmanglij seemed to lean further into the darkness. Thus, isolating the people that didn’t have the patience to understand the telepathic octopuses and dancing robots. As a result, the show went atop many people’s head losing its audiences and ratings alike.
Therefore, even though there isn’t any official announcement on The OA season 3, the speculations around it are massive. What one day seems like an unforeseeable idea might result in the revival of The OA Season 3 by Marling, Batmanglij and Netflix. Who knows?
