Created by Marta Kauffman (co-creator of ‘Friends’) and Howard J. Morris, ‘Grace and Frankie‘ is a comedy series on Netflix starring legendary actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Despite opening to mixed response on its premiere in 2015, the series was subsequently met with universally favourable reviews. It was revealed in 2019 that the series had been renewed for a seventh and final season that will consist of 16 episodes. In March 2020, the production of the upcoming season was halted due to COVID-19. However, despite initially disclosing that the production will resume in January 2021, it has now been revealed that the shooting has been pushed further ahead. Read on to find out why.
‘Grace and Frankie’: A friendship against all odds…
The series revolves around Grace Hanson, a sophisticated woman and retired cosmetics mogul, and Frankie Bergstein, a hippie art teacher, whose husbands, Robert and Sol (played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, respectively), are colleagues. The men decide to leave their wives after announcing that they are both gay and are in love with each other. Despite having never really liked each other previously, their situation brings the two closer and sends them on a journey of dealing with life together and becoming best friends.
After the release of its first season, ‘Grace and Frankie’ also became a subject of controversy when Fonda and Tomlin expressed their displeasure over receiving the same salaries as co-stars Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen. Later Sheen and Waterston released a statement stating their female co-stars were being cheated and deserved to get paid more. Later the actresses made a statement saying that they were perfectly happy with their fee structure and had no issues with Netflix.
Filming of season 7 delayed
Jane Fonda explained the reasons behind the delay saying, “We’ve gotten word that Grace & Frankie will continue filming our 7th and final season in early June of 2021. A long time to wait but, given the age and vulnerability of the 4 leads, it’s best. I’ll be headed into 84 by the time we’re done. Yikes! This last season will have 16 episodes instead of the usual 12”. The new season will commence filming in June 2021.
This news comes after Netflix announced that season 7 will be the penultimate season for ‘Grace and Frankie’. As the show is reaching its end, fans now are wondering how the series will end.
Season 7: Storyline, characters, and other updates
While talking about season 7, showrunner Kauffman said, “In terms of season 7, I can’t say an excessive amount of, however, we’re going to be coping with Robert, Sol, Grace, and Frankie in a manner in that we haven’t seen earlier than”. Considering how the final scene in season 6 showed Grace and Frankie returning home and finding Sol and Robert homeless, the upcoming season will reveal Grace, Frankie, Sol, and Robert living together under one roof. The dynamics between Grace’s new husband Nick and ex-husband will also be explored in season 7. Brianna and Barry’s relationship too will be shown in a different light.
The grapevine is that Dolly Parton might also be making an appearance in season 7. Previously, celebrities RuPaul and Nicole Richie have also guest-starred on the show. We are also hoping to see more crossovers just like the previous season had members of ‘Shark Tank’ appearing in their element. The makers and cast of the show have promised a fun ride full of twists and turns that will mark the end of the popular series.
