TNT will not let go of their hit show The Alienist. After the massive success of the Angel of Darkness, more is being planned. There is only one rider though — the dropping viewer count.
Angel of Darkness is the sequel to the original TV series The Alienist and part of TNT’s growing suspense and thriller arsenal. The eight-episode series was released this year in July amid much critical acclaim and fan support.
In The Angel of Darkness, Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl) and John Moore (Luke Evans) must team up to find an elusive serial killer haunting the streets of New York in the late 19th century. Recently, it was announced that TNT has given the green light to another season of Angel of Darkness. Here’s everything that we know so far.
Highlights:
- What is the show about?
- What has happened so far on Angel of Darkness?
- What can fans expect from the second upcoming season?
- Who will star in it?
The Alienist is pure brilliance and Angel of Darkness is an undeniable masterpiece. Now, fans are all dying to know if there’s more of it. That might not seem a very far-fetched idea when you consider that the show is based upon the fictional works of Caleb Carr. Angel of Darkness is only the second installment in the Kreizler novel series.
What is the show about?
“In the 19th century, persons suffering from mental illness were thought to be alienated from their own true natures. Experts who studied them were therefore known as Alienists” The above quote appears as an epigraph at the opening of the show.

The 8-episode series takes us on a tour of New York’s unexplored and grim side, one full of deceit, murders, yellow press sensationalism and women’s changing roles in society. Towards the end of the season we see the trio head over to Brooklyn for a better and deeper look into the origin of the killer. They head up against hostile factions within the police department as well as a disgruntled criminal gang as they race against time to save civilian lives and catch New York’s most wanted killer.

What can fans expect from the second upcoming season?
As things stand right now, the new season has not been made official yet, although its precedent exists in the novel series. It is likely that TNT will not abandon its most-promising thriller without it completing its full course. The next novel in line is still being written by author Caleb Carr. One thing that could prove to be a major roadblock for the continuation of Angel of Darkness could be the series’ dropping viewer count.
Who will star in it?
The show would not be the same without Daniel Bruhl (as Dr. Kreizler), Dakota Fanning (as Sara Howard) and Luke Evans (as John Moore). The trio is something of central importance when it comes to The Alienist and Angel of Darkness. Besides those three names, fans can expect various other actors to return such as Rosy McEwen, Melanie Field as well as the addition of new characters.
