What can fans expect from the new season?
In August of 2018, TNT announced that they have ordered a renewal of their award-winning show ‘The Alienist’. The new season will be based upon Caleb Carr’s novel “The Angel of Darkness“, and produced by Paramount Television Studios with showrunner Stuart Carolan and director David Caffrey. The gripping, turn of the century, psycho-killer mystery highlights both New York’s budding and illustrious elite class and the city’s dark places and how the two overlap. According to TNT,
“In ‘The Alienist: Angel of Darkness‘, Sara has opened her private detective agency and is leading the charge on a brand-new case. She reunites with Dr Kreizler, the formidable alienist, and John Moore, now a New York Times reporter, to find Ana Linares, the kidnapped infant daughter of the Spanish Consular. Their investigation leads them down a sinister path of murder and deceit, heading towards a dangerous and elusive killer”.

This is exactly one year following the events of the first season of ‘The Alienist’, in which Sara Moore, now a licensed private detective seeks out Laszlo’s help to find the kidnapped, infant daughter of a visiting Spanish dignitary. The trio will discover just how deep institutional corruption goes and how sexism affects everything.

What was season 1 about?
The story had begun with Teddy Roosevelt calling upon Dr. Laszlo, a criminal psychologist, and John Moore, a newspaper illustrator, among others to solve a series of murders of boy prostitutes in New York. They are assisted by the twins Marcus and Lucius in the NYPD, and Sara Howard, the commissioner’s secretary. In their investigative process, the protagonists face a lot of opposition from agents in the police force who are more loyal to protecting the New York elite’s reputation than the law itself.
With regards to a follow-up season, Daniel Bruhl said, “It was always a limited series, that was the plan. So I didn’t think any further than that. But we all agree that we wouldn’t mind going back because we love each other so much and we love our characters”.
