Which platform is going to be home for the next season of ‘Homeland’?
2011 witnessed Showtime release Alex Gansa’s political, espionage thriller, ‘Homeland‘ to popular and critical acclaim. The series became one of the most-watched shows on Showtime with unprecedented high ratings and exceptionally positive reviews.

The unpredictability of its plot and stellar performances made ‘Homeland’ a fan-favourite. The award-winning series was an adaptation of the 2010 Israeli drama, ‘Prisoners of War’, and went on for 8 seasons before finally coming to an end in 2020. Numerous fans were not satisfied with where it ended, and since then have been awaiting a revival of the show that ties certain loose ends and gives them the closure that they need.
However, the real question that now arises is this:If the showrunners decide to green-light a season 9, will it be retained by Showtime or will it be picked by an OTT like Netflix?
The spy thriller that was a work of sheer brilliance
‘Homeland’ saw Claire Danes in a role of a lifetime as the undaunted, bipolar, CIA official, Carrie Mathison, who set out to expose Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), a supposed double agent and hence, a threat to national security in season 1. Danes’ portrayal of the troubled, lion-hearted, and dutiful Mathison, along with Lewis’s intense and complex Brody not only won them multiple accolades but also became the driving force of the series.
Showtime announced in 2018 that the 8th season of ‘Homeland’ would be the conclusive one. As Gansa had rightly teased, season 8 was bigger than ever with “larger national stakes”. The final season had Carrie backed against the wall because of the unreliable U.S. government and saw her relying on the surprisingly consistent Russians for help.
Carrie’s allegiance to her mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) was tested as she was assigned with the task of killing him. In the finale, Carrie came full circle as she refused to betray her mentor and finally became what she had initially set out to expose, a double agent.
What’s next in store for ‘Homeland’?
The bittersweet finale was mostly deemed as satisfactory by audiences and critics alike. However, its relatively open ending has fans refusing to believe that this is the end of their favourite show. So, when the show’s co-creator, Howard Gordon, was asked about what the future holds for this iconic show, he replied,
“Never say never, but I think all of us are beyond grateful for the experience and are now ready to go on and do something else”.
He continued, “Who knows what will happen in five or six years, but, at the moment, I feel like you have seen the last of her”, hinting at the possibility of a reboot in the future.
Claire Danes herself suggested that there might be more to come, during an interview with “The Guardian”, and was quoted saying, “I loved [Carrie]. It was just so nice to play the smartest person in the room, somebody who was so daring and unapologetically ambitious and such a badass. She’s not really going away”.
Showrunner, Gansa, also gave fans hope by commenting, “As [co-creator Howard Gordon] has said, ‘never say never’. All of us are happy with where we ended the show and the series. Another chapter doesn’t feel necessary at the moment. But who knows what’s going to happen? Who knows what Claire and Mandy want to do? Who knows what Howard wants to do? We don’t know what that looks like. For now, it feels like closure”.
Showtime or Netflix: Which one would it be?
Now, the question burning in the minds of viewers is that if the makers of ‘Homeland’ ultimately decide to give a go to another season of the fast-paced action-thriller, would it be back on cable tv (Showtime) or will it go to an OTT platform like Netflix. The answer to this question seems a little unclear at the moment. Gansa has indicated his interest in going ahead with the show if a streaming service such as Netflix makes an irresistible offer to them.
However, considering how Showtime has been home to the series since 2011, it may make all plausible efforts to retain the popular show. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, it will be quite exciting to see this scenario unfold.
