The Emmy-winning comedy series is full of colourful characters, but somehow, they only dress in black and white!
If you love comedy television and are familiar with sitcoms, you surely know all about ‘Schitt’s Creek’! The series chronicles the life of the formerly wealthy Rose family, who are forced to live in a ramshackle motel they bought as a joke.

Created and starring father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the series swept the comedy category at the Emmys this year. They won statuettes for best comedy, lead as well as supporting actor and actress, and writing and directing.
If you’re wondering why it’s so popular, it’s because ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is simply the best, and better than all the rest that came before it. The show revolves around a small town where nothing happens much, but its residents are quirky, funny, and have hilarious personalities.
Fans of the series have noticed that the titular Rose Family often dresses in black and white, but don’t know why! Keep reading as we attempt to decode the reason behind it.
All about the costumes in ‘Schitt’s Creek’
It’s always sunny and warm in ‘Schitt’s Creek’, but Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O’Hara), David (Dan Levy), and Alexis (Annie Murphy) are seen sporting darker colours. While Johnny and Alexis occasionally wear colours, Moira and David hardly ever deviate from their comfort zones.
Moira’s fashion is glamorous, incredibly memorable, and just so stylish! While her wardrobe mostly includes black outfits in dresses and studded jackets, David’s includes sweaters, drop-crotch pants, and designer sneakers. Moira has a wall of wigs that distinguish each of her looks, wears high heels even to town meetings, which has made her character immensely popular.
According to a Reddit user, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ features “purposeful and brilliant costuming”. Black and whites are elegant, so it would make sense for Moira to base her wardrobe on those two colours. David, in a way, emulates his mother’s fashion and her style because he is closest to her.
‘Schitt’s Creek’ sets and filming locations
The series is almost entirely shot in real locations, excluding the interior scenes which are filmed in a studio in Toronto. A short drive north of Toronto is Godwood, a small town that served as the inspiration, and where most scenes in the show are filmed at. The show’s popularity has led its fans to flock to the town, to post in front of its popular locations.

Godwood’s buildings are used for exterior shots of Café Tropical, Bob’s Garage, the SchittHouse, and the Town Hall! The Rosebud Motel, however, is in a different location entirely.
The motel might be fictional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go visit it in real life! The Rosebud motel is an eight-apartment building in Orangeville, Ontario. The cast and crew rented it for a month each year, but the show’s die-hard fans often visit the location to make memories and share them on social media!
Here are some unbelievable secrets about the show
The series ran for six seasons before going off-air, but there are so many things that unravelled behind-the-scenes! It’s impossible to list each and every one of them, but we’re going to share some of our favourite ones.
Three of the cast members – Johnny, David, and Twyla (Sarah Levy) – are actually related in real life! Co-creators Eugene and Dan play father and son (as in real life), while Sarah plays Twyla Sands. While writing the series, Dan Levy was inspired by the wealthy Kardashians, and what would happen to them if they lost all of it one day.
Catherine O’Hara came up with the idea for Moira’s wigs and her unrecognizable accent, which the actor says is inspired by the characters travels from around the world. The show also never makes a big deal about sexuality, which is something Dan Levy is passionate about. It was important for Dan to “present a love story that’s without fear of consequence” on ‘Schitt’s Creek’.
Our favourite ‘Schitt’s Creek’ secret is that Noah Reid, (who plays David’s love-interest, Patrick) composed the infamous “Open Mic” song himself! He serenades David with his own version of “The Best“, originally sung by Bonnie Tyler. Reid took the initiative and ensured that the moment would forever appear as one of the couple’s most special ones.
