This genesis caused him and his father Eugene to come up with ‘Schitt’s Creek’, a Canadian sitcom about the Rose family. Showing a wealthy family relocating to a small town after getting all their money grabbed illegally by their business manager, the sitcom quickly became a mass-favourite. However, success was not gained overnight; the sitcom was receiving abysmal ratings for the first two seasons. Netflix came across as a saviour and the series became an international hit. So what is so special about this sitcom that makes the show’s loyal fan-base taking all the criticism directed at the show personally?

For one, the series follows a very unique premise. The Rose family, consisting of father Johnny Rose, mother Moira Rose, son David Rose, and the daughter Alexis Rose, is at the centre stage here. The basic premise of the series revolves around the Rose family as they adapt to their newly acquired ‘middle-class lifestyle’ that they find initially repulsive, but gradually get comfortable with. With the father buying an entire town for his son on his birthday on a whim, the eccentricity of former actress mother, the tantrums of the spoilt brat daughter, and the adjustment issues faced by their pretentious son, the sitcom is a laughter riot. The sitcom sets the stage right and has dealt with many issues throughout its six seasons. But, over time, the story arc that became the central conflict on the sitcom is the budding relationship between David and Patrick, the former’s business partner.

The first encounter happens in the episode “Motel Review” of the 3rd season when David is trying to start an apothecary business. And when that whistle-worthy “kiss” happened in the season finale, fans began rooting for them both.

However, if things are smooth sailing for David, would that be the David Rose we have come to adore? Trouble knocks the door in form of Rachel, Patrick’s ex-fiancé who makes an unwanted appearance in the 4th season. The “dance” happens and they are back together, and through most of the 5th season, the couple remains strongly intact and they become closer than ever. Minor roadblocks, such as coming out to the parents and some general homophobia, happens but eventually, troubles are at bay. Their marriage further seals the deal in the series finale.
The show features some cute moments between Patrick and David
The show features some romantic and warm moments between Patrick and David, making the fans root for the two. While it began slow, the chemistry and sexual tension between the two took a character development of its own. Some of the fan favourite moments shared between the two are listed below:
#1. Coffee – Patrick buying coffee for David may not seem like a big deal on its own, but understanding the context, it becomes clear how much Patrick cares for David’s needs. And it happens the night after they shared their first kiss, making the whole moment way more special.
#2. The First Kiss – Well, it doesn’t seem like it, but it was a big deal. Following the kiss, Patrick asks David if they could talk the next day, David responds with a sly smile, which speaks way more than any words could have. Cute!!
#3. Double Serenading – David serenades Patrick after getting into their first fight and sings his rendition of “The Best”. The same song is sung by Patrick a few episodes earlier. The impact of the moment was emotional and just, so cute!
#4. Coming Out – David knew how nervous Patrick would be before coming out to his parents. We knew in advance we were in for an epic scene when David lends a helping hand to make things easier for Patrick in front of his parents. The “Brighter than Sunshine” slow dance was the cherry on the top.
#5. The Proposal – The show is full of Patrick-David moments but nothing tops this biggie, yes, not even the marriage. Patrick proposes to David on the hike, quite David-y, wouldn’t you say?
What lies ahead in season 7 of ‘Schitt’s Creek’?
Season 6 ends with David and Patrick getting married and this happy ending was touted to be the final destination for our two handsome hunks. The makers also made it clear that the show had met its end. However, in a 2020 interview, Dan seemed quite “not so pessimistic” about the show’s return and hinted in an interview that the show could return for another season if the need was felt.
But who said we couldn’t speculate where the David-Patrick relationship would go if season 7 ever materializes? For one, given David’s history with dating, we could never be sure whether he could pull off a long term relationship. If that ever happens (we wish it doesn’t), David would more likely go his old ways of casual dating and stuff. Meanwhile, Patrick would just be devastated and it would take him quite some time to move on from David. If season 7 saws the light of the day, we can assume this hypothesis would fit David’s personality. But we can never be sure!
