‘Russian Doll’, your favourite time-loop comedy and its crazy, colourful characters have started filming season 2!
You might think that Groundhog Day is a done to death concept, but that shouldn’t stop you from watching ‘Russian Doll’! This bravura, Emmy nominated comedy series is the brainchild of Amy Poehler, Natasha Lyonne, and Leslye Headland. The storyline revolves around Nadia Vulvokov (played by Lyonne), a game developer, who repeatedly dies and relives the same night. She’s stuck in an ongoing time-loop of sorts and is unable to figure out the source or why it’s happening to her. She dies in multiple ways, only to wake up unharmed and back at the same party where she is celebrating her 36th birthday.

On her completely crazy night, Nadia, who initially imagines she’s dealing with this situation alone, meets Alan, who is caught in the same loop. They go on to discover that the little situation they have is connected, and they set out on a mission to solve it together. The show is full of witty, fast-paced dialogues, it’s a labyrinth of human connections and unveils its layers like a matryoshka doll. Slowly, but steadily, and exactly when required.
The first season itself received 13 Emmy nominations and was renewed for a second just two months after its debut. Lyonne’s acting prowess has been credited with the success of the show, as has been the outstanding writing and production. With season 2 on the way, fans have been wondering if Natasha Lyonne will return, considering her story ended in the first season. Keep reading to find out!
‘Russian Doll’ Season 2 has been confirmed
In June 2019, the official Twitter account for the series confirmed the new season in a video from Natasha. So, a second season is certainly on the way, and if we’re lucky, season 3 will be on its way too! The streaming giant has only confirmed the show’s renewal for a second, but the creators have a third in mind. Co-creator Leslye Headland spoke with “RadioTimes.com” where she confirmed that her team pitched three seasons of the show to Netflix.
She said, “We initially pitched it as three seasons. We came in with it as like, ‘Here’s the idea for season one, here’s the idea for season two, here’s the idea for season three’. So, I could definitely see us going back to one of those ideas”. This means that the second season would’ve been ideally written to introduce a third! The show’s success during awards season and its high ratings could influence Netflix and make them consider a potential third season.

Who is returning for the next season?
The showrunners have been very tight-lipped about ‘Russian Doll’ Season 2, but considering Natasha announced the renewal, she’s definitely coming back! The ‘Orange Is the New Black’ actor will reprise her role as Nadia, and her time-loop counterpart Alan aka Charlie Barnett is expected to return as well.
We’re expecting a handful of new characters, but it’d be great to see Maxine and Lizzy (Greta Lee and Rebecca Henderson)! Nadia’s mother Lenora (Chloë Sevigny) might return to haunt her once again, but fans doubt that. There have also been rumours that Yul Vazquez and Elizabeth Ashley will return as John Reyes and Ruth Brenner! The first season ended with Nadia and Alan escaping their time loop and strolling around lower Manhattan, so the new one should ideally pick up from there.
Is there a release date for ‘Russian Doll’ Season 2?
If it weren’t for the pandemic restrictions that stopped the production of ‘Russian Doll’ and other shows across the globe, we’d be watching Nadia and Alan’s mind-bending adventures right now. The series was originally meant to begin filming in May this year, but they had to cease production because of coronavirus.
We can expect to see ‘Russian Doll’ sometime next year since some sources have revealed that the show is filming.
Adapting to a new mandate of guidelines can’t be easy, so ‘Russian Doll’ Season 2 might be indefinitely delayed.
There’s no official synopsis yet, which makes it seems like the writers and the production team want to avoid speculations and conspiracy theorists. The story will unfold in its own time, we just have to patiently wait for it.
