What went down in season 7?
With all the harassment, injustice, and lack of empathy these women faced throughout the series, the inmates of Litchfield prison proved themselves to be a source of strength for the audience and a reason to be called great revolutionists.
Season 7 begins with Piper adjusting to her new life out of jail while trusting Alex for her word to keep clean. Daya is all revengeful after she catches Daddy fooling around with other women; she overdoses the latter with fentanyl. While Blanca reunites with Maritza at the ICE facility, Suzanne aka crazy eyes tries to mend Taystee and Cindy’s relationship. Red, who is now suffering from dementia, is finally out of SHU and is cared for by Gloria.
In the outside world, Piper goes to work for her dad but messes up when she takes a day off with Cal. Maritza finds out that she wasn’t born in the US after all, and is deported back to Columbia. Meanwhile, Aleida tries to keep her teenage daughter out of trouble but ends up violating her probation.

Taystee begins to take advantage of her position, but ultimately bears the brunt of her actions. Before getting released, Cindy makes amends to the people she’s hurt.
Halfway through season 7, Caputo tries to get ahead of a scandal. While Daya sends Taystee on a mission to retrieve a phone that was taken away during a sweep, Nicky finds romance with one of the ICE detainees. The show begins to get more intense when Suzanne gives Taystee a journal explaining everything that went down the night Piscatella died.

Having failed her GED practice test, Pennsatucky finds out that she is dyslexic, but that doesn’t stop her from studying harder. After giving the final GED test, she assumes the worst and overdoses on drugs and dies. The saddest part is that she does pass. Meanwhile, Blanca finally wins her case, is set free, and is reunited with Diablo.
On the same boat to freedom are Cindy and Gloria, who are released from prison and reunited with their family. The show ends with a tribute to Poussey through a ‘Poussey Washington Fund’ started by Taystee with some help from Judy King. And since Alex is transferred to Ohio, Piper moves to the state to start afresh and be closer to her wife.
The possibility of a season 8
Before the release of the seventh season, it was announced that the instalment would also be the last one. Knowing that the series is based on a book adaptation, it seems like showrunner Jenji Kohan didn’t quite “adapt” everything from the memoir.
For instance, in an interview with “Vice”, Kerman expressed that she hardly ever got into fights. Arrival at the prison wasn’t as intimidating as depicted in the show as she explains, “When a new person arrived, their tribe — white, black, Latino, or the few and far between ‘others’ — would immediately make note of their situation, get them settled, and steer them through their arrival”.
Unlike in the Netflix drama, Piper had Larry by her side till the very end; there was no moving to Ohio to be closer to Alex. So, there’s clearly a lot that Jenji can create to make season 8 happen. Besides, fans are obviously still very curious to know how life is for inmates who are still in prison and those who are outside.
When will season 8 release?
Fans were very heartbroken upon hearing that their favourite show was coming to an end. “Öh wait, what? I thoughts there was gonna be more season(8) of ‘Orange Is the New Black’. Sunuvva … I just finished S7. So is that it? Damn ladies. Shit. I’m gonna miss yáll. #OITNB”, wrote a fan on Twitter.
We’re almost half-way through 2020, and things on the outside aren’t too happening and because of COVID-19, all productions have been stalled. Meanwhile, there is no official statement by the showrunners on whether they have greenlit the new season.
And, if Jenji Kohan, along with the cast, agrees to a new season, no one knows for sure when shooting for the new installation will begin. But with old shows being rebooted and revived, there still stands a fat chance for Netflix to renew the show.
