Unlike shows in general, the BAFTA-winning series was not stretched out and ended after three seasons despite massive popularity, as the makers believed that this was where the story culminated. Since its 2020 spin-off has failed to receive the same kind of acclaim, is Showtime thinking of bringing back ‘Penny Dreadful’? What is the ‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 4 release date?
Penny Dreadful – Gothic television with a literary bend
The title ‘Penny Dreadful’ came from a type of cheap serial stories or poetry available to the working class in 19th century England. It is often referred to as, “Britain’s first taste of mass-produced popular culture for the young”.
The gothic fantasy influenced ‘Penny Dreadful’ episodes were a frightening thriller which spaced out its scares and gore in perfect measurement. ‘Penny Dreadful’ consisted of famous freakish characters such as Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Henry Jekyll from “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” as well as several characters from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, including Count Dracula himself, Abraham Van Helsing, Mina Harker, John Seward and Renfield, along with some original characters. With its 19th century setting, ‘Penny Dreadful’ episodes were successfully built around chilling plots in a vintage background.
The series had an ensemble star-cast consisting of Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Danny Sapani, Harry Treadaway, Josh Hartnett, Helen McCrory, Simon Russell Beale, Patti LuPone and Wes Studi in main roles. The series has been lauded for its performances and the enthralling portrayal of its twisted plotlines.
‘City of Angels’ – The spin-off that didn’t pay off
In April 2020, ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ premiered as spin-off/sequel to ‘Penny Dreadful’. Led by ‘Game of Thrones’ alum Natalie Dormer, the series generated quite some buzz. However, it failed to deliver with dreadfully low ratings and poor critical reviews. Fans have been wondering whether in spite of the reviews, will ‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 4 ‘City of Angels’ might make a comeback.
The series is set 50 years after the happenings of its preceding show, in the 1930s, during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Set in Los Angeles, the characters are all connected to a dispute between a Mexican deity, Santa Muerte, (Lorenza Izzo) and her sister, Magda (Natalie Dormer), a demoness. As detectives, Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener are assigned to a heinous murder case, and they find themselves getting pushed deeper and deeper into the history of their city and getting entangled with rising tensions because of Nazi conspiracies, racial hostilities, and a possible war.
Despite the fact that the series maintains the same horror and dark fantasy core, it falls flat because of its substandard writing and average performances. It fails to provide viewers with anything they haven’t already seen before. The show has not been able to hit the one million mark in terms of viewership and hasn’t been renewed for a season 2 yet.
In spite of its reviews, fans of the show still appreciated the show, and are hopeful that they will at least get to see a ‘Penny Dreadful’ movie if not a whole other season.
Is the ‘Penny Dreadful’ reboot happening?
When the makers ended the show in 2016, they said this was because the story had concluded. Showtime head David Nevins said, “I always knew it wasn’t going to be a really long-running show — John made that clear coming in. As he was laying out what he wanted to do this season, John came in and said, ‘This needs to be the end of Vanessa Ives. I know exactly how I want to end it. And when Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), when that character, is done, I think the show is done’. And I went through the usual stages of grief, of, “No, there are lots of other great characters. You can keep going.” But, eventually, he persuaded me that that’s not the smart way to handle it, and that different shows have different rhythms and fit in different boxes, and that this was the right rhythm and the right box and the right ending”.
Creator Logan explained that it really was the end of the show. “I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end, that’s all she wrote. The whole idea to have this be the end of the series applies to all of the characters not just for Vanessa Ives and I felt the ending was for Malcolm and Ethan was Ethan got the father that he wanted and Sir Malcolm got the family he needed and together they came to a nice thing of stasis”.
Considering the fate of its lead character and also how the show-runners are adamant on not overextending the show, it is unlikely that there will be a ‘Penny Dreadful’ season 4 reboot. However, Showtime may be renewing the spin-off for a season 2 quite soon to see if the show does better with the audiences. But I think for now this is all that we will be getting to see of ‘Penny Dreadful’.
