The cultural impact of ‘PAW Patrol’
The show is no longer “just a kid’s show”. ‘PAW Patrol’ gained popularity among various celebrities and public figures. During the 90th Academy Awards ceremony, TV host Jimmy Kimmel praised Ryder and his team of puppies for always saving the day. In his 2017 speech, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned the ‘PAW Patrol’ characters by name, calling himself and his kids big fans of the show. Even Justin Timberlake named Chase as his favourite ‘PAW Patrol’ member on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’.

After news of police brutality against George Floyd took the media by storm, a cultural reckoning started happening. The depiction of law enforcement and police in entertainment was brought under the microscope, evaluating its impact on our ability to think and respond critically to these burning issues. As a result, the ‘PAW Patrol’ was also under increased scrutiny. With activists calling for defunding police across the United States, TV shows revolving around law enforcement were facing the brunt of it. ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ cancelled their plans for season 8, while shows like ‘Live PD’ and ‘COPS’ were cancelled altogether. So is the future of ‘PAW Patrol’ in jeopardy?
‘PAW Patrol’: A survivor of cancel culture
Rumours surrounding ‘PAW Patrol’ Season 8 started doing rounds when White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested at a press conference that alongside ‘Live PD’ and ‘COPS’, ‘PAW Patrol’ was also axed, as part of the dreaded cancel culture. Things got so serious that the ‘PAW Patrol’ makers had to address the issue officially on Twitter – “No need to worry. PAW Patrol is not cancelled”.
‘PAW Patrol’ officially hush cancellation rumours on Twitter
Thus, ‘PAW Patrol’ is not cancelled. It gloriously survived the cancel culture, but keeping in mind the cultural upheaval and evolving consumer behaviour, the makers surely have to tread carefully going forward. Although ‘PAW Patrol’ survived cancellation, it is unclear if efforts were actually made to shut it down. Nevertheless, whoever made the effort was clearly unsuccessful. ‘PAW Patrol’ was renewed for season 8 on February 19, 2020. Not just that, a feature film titled ‘PAW Patrol: Jet To The Rescue’ is also scheduled for theatrical release on 10 September 2021.
